Quick question – I wondered what the best way was to delete pictures from the SD card in my camera? I have backups of them, but wasn’t sure if putting the card into my laptop and deleting them from there is the right way to do it? Or should I use the camera’s delete function?

I had good intentions to try to keep the card somewhat “free” but have managed to pile up a lot of pictures and thought it was time to save them off onto my laptop as a backup and then delete them.

    Thanks!

And – if this isn’t the right forum to ask that – please feel free to move it.

Your camera should have a format card option, mine do. That clears it very quickly. Look in your manual for the option.

Yes, mine does, but I didn’t really want to remove all of the pictures, so formatting it isn’t going to work. I just want to delete some of the old ones that I have saved off to my laptop – mainly so that I am not scrolling through tons of pictures to find the new ones.

Seems I had read that one way was better than the other, but I wasn’t sure which was which!

Thanks for the info – I will keep that in mind when I am ready to just wipe the card completely!

If your intent is to completely clean the SD Card, the recommendation I have seen is to reformat the card using your camera. This should ensure that the card is fresh and ready for use by the camera.

OK, typing in parallel. My camera manual also addresses deleting using the camera.

Using Windows File Explorer can be tricky for manipulating photos. I have inadvertantly duplicated photos on my camera SD card with a slip of a mouse button handling multiple selections.

My Sony digital camera lets me delete individual picture files which are .jpg’s.  If that is not your case or it would take too long, I would say you could try using your laptop.  If the laptop recognizes the SD card and “mounts” it, that’s a good sign. If you can see the picture files on it try right clicking on one file you want to delete and see if it allows you to.

Edit:  I must say that I’ve only done this with SD’s on Windows 7 and Linux Mint.  What happens on Windows 10 or 11 I can’t say with any certainty.

Thanks for the input. My intention is to batch delete pictures that I no longer want to keep on the DS card – not individually, but a group at a time. But some I will want to keep there so I guess formatting isn’t an option. I should be better at moving pictures to the laptop and then deleting them from the SD card right away, but I tend to just let them pile up and now I have a lot to figure out how to delete.

      Thanks!!

I have always transferred and deleted photos from my cameras memory cards directly thru Explorer on my PCs (both Win 7 and Win 10). I have never had any problems or lost photos which spans many years and many photos. I first started with copy and paste and then go back and delete those copied photos, but now I just cut and paste from the card to my PC.  My original cards still work, so in my experience deleting the photos with Explorer rather than the camera doesn’t seem to make a difference.

Thanks so much for that information! I feel better about deleting the photos now, and since I’ve already copied them, so I guess I can just put the card back into the computer and delete the ones I want.

        Thanks again!!

My intention is to batch delete pictures that I no longer want to keep on the DS card – not individually, but a group at a time.

First, it does not matter which method you use in terms of the effectiveness of the delete. By that I mean this method is not more “secure” or more complete than that method. If you delete a file, the space becomes available.

Based on your stated intention of wanting to delete multiple pictures in one sitting, the better question might be, “What is the easiest way to delete multiple pictures from my SD card?”

On my current Canon and my last Sony cameras, using the cameras’ menu, I could only delete them one at a time, or format the card to delete them all. There is no option to select multiple. Just all or 1. And if deleting more than 1 or 2 at once, using the camera’s menu system was a tedious process, especially on the camera’s tiny LCD display panel and these 70 year old eyes.

But with a card reader attached to my PC, it is simple to insert the card into the reader then delete multiple pictures at once with Windows File Manager. Not only much easier, MUCH easier to see what I was doing on my big computer monitors, but much faster too.

Thanks so much for the help! So glad to know that doing it on the PC is the best and easiest way to do it! I really want to keep some of the pictures, but deleting them one by one would take ages since I have so many.

Once I get the card organized and pictures deleted, I’ll try to do a better job not letting them just pile up!

      Thanks again for the reply!

Rather than messing with the SD card, I use a USB cable to connect the phone to the PC. Then, use File Explorer to do the rest. Simple and easy using a familiar tool.
