• Deleting Favourites (IE6)

I have a machine that displayed all the ususal behaviours for spyware etc. I have cleaned it up, but I still have a list of favourites that I have not put there. They look dodgy.

I have run all the anti junkware programs that are recommended in the appropriate forum, and have cleaned up the machine from those.

If I go to Edit Favourites, the ones that I want to get rid of are not shown on that list. They all sit above my list of favourites.

Any suggestions of how I might delete them?

      Start Windows Explorer.
Browse to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersFavorites.
This folder contains the list of favorites shared by all users. Do you see the culprits there?

        No Hans, they are not.

I have got the user out of trouble in the short term, though. I have been playing around with Sandboxie, and have installed it on the machine. When Sandboxie starts, and runs IE as a sandobxed process, the legitimate favourties appear, but not the annoying ones.

I would still like to get to the bottom of this problem.

I suspect that they are added by a BHO (Browser Helper Object). Spyware scanners should locate those, or other tools designed to find BHOs.

Have you searched your disk and the registry for any of the shortcut names?

I think Jefferson is on the right track here. Go to Tom Coyote’s sit and download a copy of HijackThis (it’s free) and create a log file with it. Then go to this site and paste the log into their online analyzer and it should identify the junk entries (probably in the registry) and you should be able to remove them right there. HTH

            Thank you,

I’ll do that. I had run Hijack this and looked at the log, but didnt recognise anything. But I would not claim to be an expert, so should do the right thing.
