delete query

I have two tables, the first contains a list of items, with the primary key the item number, the second table has a list of items that need to be deleted from the 1st table, it also contains the item number. How do I construct a delete query in the design grid? I created a query with both tables joined on the item number field, but when I try to run it and delete records, it says cannot delete records from the specified table. Using Win98 and Access2000.

In design view for the delete query you’ve constructed, when you right-click in the grey background and choose Properties, is the Unique Records property set to Yes? If not, set it to Yes and see if that makes a difference. Post back and let us know.
