I can’t say enough about “Degunking Windows,” by Joli Ballew and Jeff Duntemann. Not only was I able to improve the performance of my XP machine, but I used some of the same techniques to get my wife’s old Windows Me machine running (mostly) like new again.

Some of the stuff is common sense things that you know you *should* be doing anyway, but having a nice list of steps to accomplish really helps get the ball rolling.

(In the interest of full disclosure, the company I work for distribrutes books for the publisher of this title, but I did buy this one myself for my own personal use.)

ah, yes the good books of getting rid of those nagging problems with windows. I haven’t checked this one out yet, so I will have to hit up my local Bookstore and see what it has to say. hopefully it will have enough good ideas that I might decide to buy it. cheers

I haven’t seen the “Degunking” book, but have one of the co-authors’ (Jeff Duntemann’s) other books, Assembly Language Step-by-Step: Programming with DOS and Linux, 2nd Edition, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. I have no aspirations to actually program in assembly language, but purchased the book because of the insight it provides on how computers, and computer programming, actually works (the details of which are obscured when using a “high-level” language like Visual Basic), and its accessible writing style (not at all the dry style you might expect from the subject matter at hand). Assuming it’s the same Jeff Duntemann who is co-author, the “Degunking” book should be worth checking out….
