Defragging with SteadyState in effect

Here’s one I thought of up out of the clear blue, though I’m sure its come up before somewhere of course. If I use a third party defragment program when SteadyState is in effect, does it defrag the drive as normal or is it fooled as well into just defragging the virtual drive that SteadyState creates?

I employ SteadyState strategically and was just wondering if I had to cycle through disabling SteadyState beforehand or not. Seems like one of the exceptions Microsoft would have thought of but not for sure.

I’d be surprised if you could actually use a defragmenting tool in Windows Steadystate. You’d have to have admin privileges to run it and I would think it would ask
if you would like to keep the changes it made to the hard drive once you booted. So I guess it depends on how one has it set up.

If your actively using Steady State, try it and see for yourself.

Ah, prevented from running by policy restriction. So the answer is one must cycle through a disable/enable sequence in order to defrag while SS is not on.

I just thought it was an interesting question to put out before I actually got a chance to test. The built in disk defragmenter starts up but then it just sits there, like the analyze and defragment buttons are disabled.
