Do I still need to? If I do, is there an inbuilt one or what?

Windows 8.1 has a defrag task scheduled in the Task Scheduler to run automatically.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

      Hey Y’all,

      Here’s a helpful article: Win8Fourms

Note: the Scheduled task on my machine uses the command: %windir%system32defrag.exe -c -h -o -$

I’m wondering what the -$ is for?

Don’t forget to check the time of your task as you probably don’t want it interrupting your heavy working hours!
