I’m trying to help someone with her NT 4.0 workstation laptop. The drive is FAT, not NTFS. I noticed that Defrag is not available but I’m sure the drive is fragmented since she’s been using it for a couple of years. Does anyone know of a defrag utility that’s available for the NT 4.0 workstation?

Thanks. I take it that you are quite satisfied with this software. I will check it out.

I’m probably somewhat biased in that I’ve only ever used it, and upgrading is always the cheapest path.
You may wish to also look at perfectdisk but I have no experience of it.
I would add that I have never had a problem with Diskeeper, and the lite version ships as part of W2K.

          Anyone else got a recommendation?

            Leif,
you beat me to the punch, I use Diskeeper – the lite version – and it works great for me.

            Jody,
It is stable and I have had no problems with it. I am running NT Wkstn 4.0 SP6a P3 500Mhz 128RAM.

I vote for Diskeeper too. I’ve never used any other NT defragger, and I’ve never had any problems with Diskeeper. I’ve used it on both server and workstation, FAT and NTFS. On my laptop, I just set it up to run for each partition at a particular time of the evening, and go on about my business. The only gotcha in running it on a server what when the backup overlapped the defrag or vice versa. One or the other didn’t start.

My vote also is for Diskeeper.

I have tried two other similar programs, PerfectDisk and OODefrag, and neither comes close in speed or features. SysInternals offers some freeware to defragment on a limited basis. Look under the performance tools section.

I can’t crow enough about Diskeeper. Their technical support is outstanding, their software is great, and the results are excellent. The scheduling feature in DK alone makes it worth the purchase price…DK 6 will learn your useage patterns and defragment the hard drive around you. It also defrags paging files, the MFT, and consolidates directories.

            Verdict: Two Thumbs Up!

I would have to cast my vote for PerfectDisk. I used Diskeeper for a few years but it would not help on a few drives that were severely fragmented (MFT was also fragmented). PerfectDisk did take care of this and was very easy to use, also much quicker. I would try them both and see which you prefer.
