Windows 7 Ownership of Folders/Files and how to Grant Permissions instructions
The reply by Marilyn O, Forum Moderator was extremely helpful in putting the solution in a focus that a layman can understand except for step 6. It was a grand-canyon of a step that skipped over what the Windows 7 defaults are, for which folders do they apply, and how do I accomplish configuring that?
Because the original question and reply are from 2009 I have started a new thread. I am having a problem with ‘My Music’ folder that needs ownership/permissions to be reset to theWindows 7 default.
In trying to set the permissions for an individual song, to edit the properties, the ownership was set incorrectly and now my music players will not play my music. They all worked previously; Windows Media Player, Zune, Windows Media Center, and iTunes.
Here is step 6 as given by Marilyn O and what follows that is what I found and need help for.
“6. Click on Edit Button and select user from given Change Owner to list if user or group is not in given list then click on other users or groups. Enter name of user/group and click ok.”
I’ll check ‘My Documents’ ownership/permissions because I know that folder is working properly and should still be set to Windows 7’s defaults.
The current default owner on right-click ‘My Documents,’ > Properties > Security tab > Advanced button > Owner tab isS-#-#-##-#########-##########-#########-###3
Is S-#-#-##-#########-##########-#########-###3 the default owner?
Is that what we should be setting as the ‘Current Owner’ of ‘My Documents,’ ‘My Music,’ ‘My Pictures,’ ‘My Podcasts,’ and ‘My Videos?’
If you cancel or close the ‘Advanced Security Settings for My Documents’ dialog and return to the ‘Security tab’ dialog you’ll notice there are, in my case, four ‘Group or user names’
· Authenticated Users
· SYSTEM
· Administrators (Computername/Administrators)
· Users (ComputernameUsers)
I don’t see S-#-#-##-#########-##########-#########-###3 or anything similar? Which of the above four is my default choice that representsS-#-#-##-#########-##########-#########-###3? If none of them represent that choice then how isthat Windows 7 default set?
I have been to the TechNet and MSDN sites to find an answer and they go into much depth but they assume technical skills that I don’t have and I don’t have time to get a degree right now. I need the blow-by-blow, step-by-step approach to reset the Windows 7 defaults.
