Running the Windows 10 anniversary version.

I want to reset my browser to Firefox. Have searched and tried several things including: Control Panel > default programs > selecting firefox > “Set this program as default” Nothing I’ve tried seems to work.

    Microsoft RANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Help appreciated.

      Go to Settings->System->Default apps

Scroll down and click on ‘Set defaults by app’

Pick Firefox from the list on the lhs and click ‘Set this program as default’

eta: looks like a different route to the same place you went

You could start Firefox, then under the “Tools” toolbar tab at the top, select the “Options” entry.
Click the General tab on the left, now in the right pane at the top check the box that says “Always check if Firefox is your default browser”

Now you can let Firefox set itself as the default.

Browni, it’s not the same place. OP was going to the old control panel, yours is the new control panel and definitely works (well it did for me at least). IIRC I had to use the new way as the old way didn’t seem to work (as the OP has found).

Folks did all that before posting —– it doesn’t work.

access-mdb, what are OP and IIRC? What new way? You totally lost me.

        • #1576909

          what are OP and IIRC?

IIRC = If I recall correctly. [Bonus: AFAIK = As far as I know]
OP means Original Post or Poster, ie you.
Glossary of Modern Internet Jargon and Abbreviations

          What new way?

The way described by Browni in post #2.

I’ve had some irritations with default programs in Win10 1511 and 1607 too, but haven’t had time to hunt them down. I made an effort to get TXT to default to my text editor, but no joy, Notepad still pops up. Edge shows up after Cortana web searches, despite IE being supposedly my default.

      Thanks jwitalka

Post by second poster doesn’t work. Thought I said that in original post.

        Thanks jwitalka

Post by second poster doesn’t work. Thought I said that in original post.

But the two methods are not the same.

        Your (apparent) method

        45504-cp-def-progs

Browni’s (apparent) method, which is the new one that got the defaults changed for me.

        45505-set-sys-def-apps

P.S. thanks to Jerry and Lugh for explaining my jargon

        • #1576921

Second method is what you get by default in setup. First is if you work through the control panel. I used both to no avail before the original post. Thanks anyway.

Are you logged on with a local account, or with a MS account? I had the same problem with Cyberfox. If you are not signed in with your MS account give it a try. Once I signed in to MS I could change anything I wanted to in default apps. Once done I went back to my local account.

    • #1577008

I did go logon my MS account. No difference. Thanks for the suggestion.

In search, type “default browser”. Click on Choose a default browser. Select Firefox.

That’s pretty much the standard process and it doesn’t work.

    • #1577156

In that case, check for a browser hijacker. You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling FF.

    • #1577229

There is a hijacker, it is called Windows 10. Reinstall didn’t help.

What does the default app window show as the default web browser?

        Mark

        Always shows Edge

        • #1577818

          Always shows Edge

          click Edge.
then you should have the option to select Firefox.
don’t know why Microsoft makes stuff like this so hard.

Yes, can surf using Firefox. At this point I’ve deleted the check to see if Firefox is my default browser and work from there. It is a pain but I kill Edge which boots and then navigate using Firefox.

    • #1577402

Maybe running sfc /scannow would find the problem.

I tried that and just did it again, no joy. Are there registry setting that control this issue? If so where are they?

    • #1577440

If you set Firefox to be the default browser then, using a registry monitor, I believe the following are the registry keys affected:

      Code:
      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionApplicationAssociationToasts]
      “FirefoxHTML_.htm”=dword:00000000
      “FirefoxHTML_.html”=dword:00000000
      “FirefoxURL_http”=dword:00000000
      “FirefoxURL_https”=dword:00000000

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.htmOpenWithProgids]
      “FirefoxHTML”=hex(00):

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.htmUserChoice]
      “Hash”=”9R3MXII02s0=”
      “ProgId”=”FirefoxHTML”

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.htmlOpenWithProgids]
      “FirefoxHTML”=hex(00):

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.htmlUserChoice]
      “Hash”=”KMrpH5iXfFs=”
      “ProgId”=”FirefoxHTML”

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsRoamingOpenWithFileExts.htmUserChoice]
      “Hash”=”+GN4D9Dc64k=”
      “ProgId”=”FirefoxHTML”

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsRoamingOpenWithFileExts.htmlUserChoice]
      “Hash”=”bRLB8ck2Jpo=”
      “ProgId”=”FirefoxHTML”

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsRoamingOpenWithUrlAssociationshttpUserChoice]
      “Hash”=”DoSx5ul2IfM=”
      “ProgId”=”FirefoxURL”

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsRoamingOpenWithUrlAssociationshttpsUserChoice]
      “Hash”=”YK3xUJOdN2M=”
      “ProgId”=”FirefoxURL”

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsShellAssociationsUrlAssociationshttpUserChoice]
      “Hash”=”wcovpqohW0o=”
      “ProgId”=”FirefoxURL”

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsShellAssociationsUrlAssociationshttpsUserChoice]
      “Hash”=”79LBArwx/qk=”
      “ProgId”=”FirefoxURL”

As you can see, the settings affect only the current user, not machine-wide.

      Hope this helps…

Thanks Rick. Those are all set correctly.

Thanks mledman. I had done all that EXCEPT deleting the email account. I’ll see if that does it.

      Crosses fingers!

    • #1577552

Appears that deleting and creating the email account may have done the trick. Fingers remain crossed but makes it had to type.

    • #1577626

That sounds promising. Fingers crossed here also.
