I heard on the radio that the county fair is selling deep fried Twinkies. I have eaten a few twinkies in my days, but never deep fried.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I imagine the recipe is boil some oil and toss them in – but how hot and for how long?

More importantly, will it leave crumbs in my keyboard?

      Interesting!

In a recent State Fair, I tasted (only a bite) a Deep-Fried candy bar (Milky Way, I think). It was not bad, but I’m glad I didn’t eat the whole thing – talk about grease and calorie overload! puke

I guess you fry them just as long as you would anything else – until the crust is golden brown. chef

I wouldn’t worry as much about the crumbs as I would about getting greasy fingers on the keyboard and mouse… but to each his (or her) own! burga

I remember when Bennigan’s Irish Pub used to serve a deep fried ham & turkey sandwich, they called it a Monte Cristo! They also had a deep fried ice cream dessert: It was a coated vanilla ball, fried crunchy, served in a bowl made of pastry and topped with a raspberry sauce. It was all good! Unfortuneately, there’s no Bennigan’s here in St. Louis. Wonder where I could find those things now?? And NO, I’m not about to deep fry anything at home, except maybe some french fries.

Totally off topic…. well, almost totally. pirate

When I was in college I knew a guy who had a deep-fryer in his dorm room. He always used to stink up the hall with french fries or fish sticks… It was quite funny and annoying at the same time… shrug

I see this thread has gone all over the place. I went to the fair and bought one – it wasn’t very good but I think it was more the vendor’s bad technique. It was very greasy and soggy. I took a bite and threw it out.

Now homemade deep fried ice cream sounds interesting but I think I’ll stick to the basics – one pint, vanilla, add a bunch of stuff in – candy, fruit, toppings, whatever you can find.

Some friends and I had an e-mail thread on that a while back when it first broke in the NY Times. Here are some recent news stories and recipes:

Keeping the Deep Fried part of this thread in mind….Some restaurants in our area serve Deep Fried Ice Cream!!
Yup…. they dip a block (serving size) of ice cream in a batter and deep fry it…Very Quickly I assume.
When served, the batter is warm and the core of the ice cream is still frozen.

Not bad, but more of a gimmick than great taste.

The only place I can ever find deep fried ice cream is in Mexican Restraunts. They use some kind of honey dip which glazes in the heat. Super good.

Here’s a recipe for you from the Family Circle book, Step-by-Step Chinese Cooking:

        Deep Fried Ice-Cream

        Ingredients:
        – 2 litres vanilla ice-cream (only use a quality brand with a low water/high fat content)
        – 1 egg
        – 1 cup flour
        – Three-quarters cup water
        – 1.5 cups fine dry breadcrumbs
        – 2 tablespoons dessicated coconut
        – 5 cups deep-frying oil

Make six large scoops of ice-cream. Return to freezer

Make a thick batter of egg, flour and water. Coat the ice-cream balls with the batter, then roll in the breadcrumbs and coconut to coat thickly. Return to freezer to freeze for several days.

Heat the oil to moderately hot. Slide in one ice-cream ball at a time to cook until the surface is golden.

Remove and serve at once with caramel topping or fresh fruit.

Hint: It is crucial that the ice-cream is solidly frozen and that the oil is sufficiently hot to cook the surface in just a few seconds.

The normal caveat applies when cooking with hot oil over an open flame. Probably a good idea to have a damp tea-towel nearby, just in case.

If anyone’s got the balls pun to try this, please let us know how it turns out.

If you ever come to England you must travel to the North as they do deep fried Mars bars. Imagine crispy coating you would normally get with fish but a beautiful smooth oozing chocolate, toffee and nougat middle thumbup . But be warned, it has about the same calorific content as a large Sunday lunch!!!!!!
