I would think you’d still want a KVM switch when trouble-shooting a ‘customers’ desktop.
“Outlier is gone. Onyx and Opti are on their way out. For me, it’s a new world.”
I’m glad I added the “1” at the end of my username when I created it decades ago. Otherwise it would be a bit disconcerting to read here that I am ‘on my way out’.
Regarding running VM’s I prefer to put them on a second NVME drive just to reduce wear and tear on the primary and to keep my primary drive performance up if doing anything disk intensive in the VM’s

It just doesn’t happen that often anymore. I’d say 98% of my “friends and family” services are now delivered remotely. The 2% are no longer carrying their system unit to my place – they bring their laptop.
I actually won’t miss the KVM. Sad to say, the new TrendNet DisplayPort KVM doesn’t quite live up to my much older TrendNet VGA KVM. And I was not impressed with tech support when I reported a problem with what admittedly was an edge case. I’ll be selling both.
second NVME drive
Obviously, something I thought about. But I’m not going to spend a lot of time in those VMs, so wear and tear related to them should be minimal in my case.
Hi Will Fastie, thank you for your articles and great job as the Editor in Chief of the AskWoody Plus Newsletter. Because you mentioned Steam and Red Alert 2, just for your information, Igor Ljubuncic, aka Dedoimedo, also is a fan of the Command & Conquer game Red Alert 2, and he has written a recent April 22, 2024 article about how to play the Red Alert 2 game in Linux. Maybe you have a Linux computer or virtual machine that you might want to experiment with, => if you can find any spare time in your busy day ?!? –
