I need to align a column of numbers using decimal tabs in Word 2007, but the numbers in a particular document have a space as the thousands separator (e.g., “12 345.67” rather than “12,345.67”), and Word is treating the space as a decimal point rather than as a thousands separator (i.e., it is aligning the space, rather than the decimal point, at the tab). I tried using non-breaking spaces, but that made no difference. How can I fix this in this document?

Would it be feasible to replace the spaces in those numbers with commas (or another character) in white font? This worked for me in the tiny test I set up — the tabs moved to the periods. (Very interesting that the tab stop defaults to the space, isn’t it!)

      Judy,

Word assumed the space was the end of a whole number, implied decimal point, that’s why it lined up there with the tab.

Thanks for your reply. I am using a white comma as a work-around but am wondering whether there is a way to configure Word so that it recognizes a space as a thousands separator and thus does not align it at a decimal tab.
