GuestMarch 5, 2019 at 6:20 pm #337839Rather than just give you a list when you run it, it stays in the system tray and tells you when a new item is added, allowing you to approve or deny it. It will display some info about the actual file to help you decide, and asks you again if the file is modified.
Upon first install, you have to approve or reject all startup programs, though it lets you choose to just allow all if you’re sure.
It has further options, but this is the usual use. The main drawback is that it occasionally displays an ad for PRO version when you open it, and has a bit of Engrish in the text.

AskWoody PlusMarch 10, 2019 at 1:36 pm #339673Well I tried Safe Startup and I have to say that I’m suitable unimpressed. I find it much easier to maintain my allowed programs/services with WhatInStartup and Serviwin from Nirsoft. Both offer superior display of information.
WhatInStartup will maintain your desired Active and Inactive startup items, it can be run on startup and it will automatically disable anything you’ve marked as do not run, or you can leave it running and it will actively disable new startups from being added. Finally, it is MUCH easier to see what’s going on then with Safe Startup.
I use Serviwin for services, unfortunately it will not re-disable unwanted services like Safe Startup, but it is so much easier to use, and I can very quickly tell if a service has been added.
The biggest problem I have is that Safe Startup doesn’t let you select already disabled services, so I would have to start from scratch and have to go through the entire list of services. No thanks. If it at least did that I would consider using it for my relatives and others that look to me for support, but as it stands it’s a lot of un-neccessary work.

GuestMarch 6, 2019 at 4:01 pm #338255I am presuming several conditions here:
If you are using Windows 7, and sometime in the past went through disabling bad Microsoft things that were not useful, you may have been in a small window called Turn Windows features on or off. Go back there again.
Windows 7 shipped with .NET 3.5 included, and the original files are still available from deep within the operating system. From control panel, programs and features, on the left sidebar is a link with a shield next to it, indicating administrative rights are required to access “Turn Windows features on or off”. select that and a small window will open quickly, but may take some time to populate with a tree of features to select. Verify that .NET 3.5.1 is selected.
If it had been turned off, selecting it now may require a restart. And then it will need to be updated. Visit Windows Update and allow that service to scan and select what is appropriate for your system. This follows Group A methodology. Group B needs further instruction.
Where I have assumed too much, reply with your system description for better feedback.
