• DDR400 In DDR333 Motherboard?

I just bought all the bits for a new P4 Celeron for my daughter’s birthday inc. 512Mb DDR 400 but the m/board was DOA so, with only 2 days to go, I’ve been forced to PC World to buy a motherboard and the only one I could get anywhere close to spec was a DDR 333 board.

Will DDR400 memory work in it?

Probably will be OK, but will run at the 300 rate.
Didn’t you get a manual with the MB from PC World?

If you have the actual manufaturer’s ID and model number, you can go to their website to check it out.
It seems to me, I read a review at a Kingman site, that tested DDR400 sticks at DDR333 rate, so that’s what leads me to think that it will run OK.
The last word though has to be the MB maker. crossfingers

      Hi Vampyre,

DDR400 RAM in a DDR333 M/B should work just fine. In fact, you may well be able to use more agressive memory timings than with the equivalent DDR333 modules. Of course, if your CPU was meant to run with a 400MHz FSB, it’ll now run 1/6th slower too.

      Cheers

Be sure the RAM is compatible (as in the model number not the DDR type) with the specific motherboard. I cannot tell you the number of times I have had squirrley problems with swapped RAM, even name brand RAM (Crucial, Kingston et al) in the “wrong type” motherboard.
