• database hangs on print (Access 97)

Hi, I have a fairly complex database, which includes 3 reports which are causing problems. If I open the database and print any one of these reports, the first report goes to the printer fine and causes no problems. If I then try to print or preview another, the database hangs the entire system (I can only break out by crashing out – ^alt/del doesn’t work either). The data for these reports is fairly complex and goes through 4 individual queries to get to the point,. All of the queries are, individually, operating fine and with good speed. All the queries have the same base tables, with different criteria being selected into crosstab queries which then form the basis of a static report. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going wrong? I get the same problem using different p.c.s and different printers…….

Okay… This may be a realllllllllyyy silly response… but whenever that kind of thing happens for no apparent reason hairout,I start thinking possible corruption…
Have you tried compacting/repairing or maybe importing everything into a new blank mdb?? …Sometimes that works for me… It’s just a thought…

Hi Trudy – yes thanks, have tried all that with no change.

        Thanks for idea though.

It’s possible you’re overloading the processor and the execution never completes. Have you tried leaving it to see if it will *ever* complete? And what did you mean by ctl-alt-del not working?

Hi Charlotte, no it never completes – as I said, system just hangs (I have left it 15-20 minutes with no change). Control Alt Delete brings up the task manager to escape from a task/hung item, but trying to break out of Access in this way does not work either. Machine has to be “Crashed” out of by switching off altogether. Not sure what you mean by overloading the processor – I have tried on 2/3 different machines (none of which, mind you, are particularly high spec). Do you mean that the underlying query structure of the reports is just too complex for the spec of machine I’m working on?

I had in mind something more like several hours. I had a 97 query a couple of jobs ago that processed something like 150,000 records and had to be run on a dual processor machine. Otherwise, it simply never completed.

You may have to post your DB without sensitive data etc, and let us take a look see.
      Pat cheers

Hi Pat, thanks – will have a look at doing this and try and post later in the week.

        Regards.
