    Yo…

In doing a defrag w/ Diskeeper this afternoon, I noticed that a great deal of time was spent organizing a Folder entitled SoftwareDistribution, located in the WINDOWS Folder on my C drive.

I don’t ever recall seeing that Folder before, but…what is it; & what does it do…as its taking up over 600 MB’s.

    Thanks,

I couldn’t find too much definitive information on that folder beyond that it is installed with SP2 and is tied in with Windows Automatic Update. It is a huge folder and apparently cannot be deleted, if you are using Automatic Update. One site I found mentioned this:
      ————————————
      The SoftwareDistribution folder is AutoUpdate.

What is probably making it huge is SP2.

Everything in the SoftwareDistributionDownload folder can be deleted.
If needed it will come back.

If you delete the SoftwareDistributionDataStore folder, you will
      lose your WU5 installation history.

Note that you will need to stop the “Automatic Updates” service before
you are allowed to delete the DataStore folder.
      —————————————

I suppose you could rename the folder with Auto Updates disabled and see what happens.

Thing is…I never grabbed SP2. I work a lot w/ digital audio & it was recommended against…so I never downloaded it…havent utilized Windows Update in years. Wonder how it got onto my machine? This is weird.

Is there a way to check the OS to see what version is currently running?

        Thanks.

Right click on “My Computer”, then properties. It should show you the info on the general tab.

You REALLY SHOULD update to SP2 and the latest updates of Windows after that release. Not only a LOT of security changes but a lot of improvement in graphics and audio handling that you should be interested in.

BTW, who touted you from not installing SP2? It’s good and it’s safe. I recommend ( as will most all Loungers ) doing it right away.

[/indent]Most of my compatriots in the digital audio forums…most of us use ASIO drivers w/ our various DAW’s (mine being SONAR5)…& they bypass the Windows Kernel Mixer anyway. No one has ever been super specific…but have only said that problems arose when they went to 2. I’ll go ask again.
