Custom Toolbars – Word 2007

Not really a question, but I’m hoping some folks will know more about this than I do, and will share their wisdom:

I tried running my old 2003 normal.dot as a global template in 2007 (as I mentioned in an earlier thread (“Building Blocks.dot”))[/size][/font]

And I discovered that I can now access many of my old 2003 macros and their customized icons, in Word 2007! [/size][/font]

The buttons show up in the Add-Ins tab, or better yet (for my purposes) I found a command that can be added to the QAT called “Custom Toolbars”, and now the macros for which I had buttons in custom toolbars in 2003 are available in that 2007 button. [/size][/font]

By fiddling around with the old 2003 normal.dot toolbars a little (thank goodness we kept one machine with Word 2003 on it), I achieved some control over the appearance of the contents of this QAT button’s display. I also put some of the old Menus into a toolbar, so now I have access to the old menus (not every command in them works, of course, esp. in Tools):

I imagine that there’s a downside to running the 2003 normal.dot as a global template,* but I’m currently getting a big kick out of it!

Your post is timely, as I am about to embark on a migration from Office 2002 to 2007, and I was wondering, not altogether idly, yesterday afternoon, about the impact, if any, that the migration would have on my existing templates. While I don’t have gobs of them, I have many business critical templates, some dating th 1997, when they were created for use with Word 97.

While most of my templates supply their associated documents with nothing more advanced than dozens of custom paragraph and character styles, margins, headers, and footers, a few, such as the one that generates my client invoices, contain complex VBA macros, also developed for Word 97.

This morning, I was thinking that I needed to see whether there is a document that identifies breaking changes in VBA code and document layout in both Word and Excel 2007. I’ll also be browsing this lounge, because such documents, even if they exist, seldom cover everything.

Well, good luck with your migration! It’s more like a dramatic emigration and a traumatic immigration, actually. Consider keeping at least one machine with Word 2002 on it, for sleuthing down the puzzles you’ll run across in 2007 (“now where did that behavior come from” queries).

We had a number of old Word 97 macros in a template, too, and they seemed to show up in, and mostly work fine in, the Add-Ins tab in Word 2007. Still, we hired someone to modernize our code and build us a ribbon tab of our own, and, altho the tab is wonderful, another result is that I, for one, no longer know how to tinker with the macro language. Sigh.

And we didn’t have to modify our styles template at all, just put an attachment button for it in our new tab area.
