With a large-ish site (> 700 files) on a win2k host, the ‘Publish To’ window shows TWO copies of every file, and one copy of each folder. Logging in to the server, I find that there is only ONE actual copy of each file.

It seems to me that FP’s database on my ‘source’ machine has somehow been hosed. How do I fix it?

      Peter,

Are you referring to this? If so, you can click on “hide” on the right hand side and collapse this view. One side is your local file structure, and the other is what is on the server itself.

Mark – I am aware of the Hide button. What is happening is this: in the left pane, i have a list of files. One of these is favicon.ico. In the right pane, I also have a list of files. Each file in the right pane is listed TWICE, as favicon.ico, favicon.ico!

When i log to the site with WS_FTP, the list of files on the site is singular!

        ps Nice skin!

Do you literally mean there is an exclamation mark after the duplicated name?
What happens if you hit F5?
Can you see any difference in the right_mouse | properties of duplicated files?

          • #599910

Sorry about the ‘!’ marks. I am still astonished.

There is NO difference between the two files in the right pane. Properties are identical. Size, identical.

I hit F5, and SOME OF THE FOLDERS ARE NOW DUPLICATED!!!! and there are 3 listings for some files! Somehow I think this violates the laws of thermodynamics.

              Very weird! I can’t duplicate that at all . . .

Maybe what i should ask now is: What are the files (and their purposes) FP uses?

Or maybe: how do i [ copy || move || replicate || ? ] a site to clean up this problem?

            • #600200

Have you tried setting FP to over-write everything regardless? (This will reset any counters you have, but will not necessarily delete any unwanted files.)
I’d be tempted to ask your ISP (if approachable) to clear out your web-space – including all FPSE’s – and start again. But somehow I don’t think that’s your problem – something is making FP see multiple copies. Do you have any sub-webs, multiple (local) copies of your web….?

My host has ‘reset the site’, which i believe means that FP extensions have been reinitialized. The extensions are 2000, they have suggested using the 02 extensions, which they believe may fix this particular problem. And since I’m not using Sharepoint (which they have experienced as a disaster), I should be okay.

When you say ‘clear out’ – do you mean, ‘take the site down’? I am not familiar with the abbrev FPSE.

FP 2k has a problem with nested folders (not subwebs, which i havenone of), and i think it is showing up again in 02. Folder nesting depth is 3, as in

              Web | Committees | Communications

and of course, Communications contains the nested folder _overlay. However, i would really REALLY not want to de-nest folders, as there are too many pages to maintain using filename jiggery-pokery.

              Sorry!
OK – clear out – the equivalent of reformatting and re-installing. (Front Page Server Extensions)

I have one 4-deep folder nest, but this is showing up fine.

I think all you can do is go for the 2002 extensions and see if this resolves it. I’m afraid I’ve never heard of a similar problem and can find nothing from searching.

Thanks for hanging in Leif !

I am going to have my host erase the original site, install 02 extensions, and then i will give it another install.

I republished the site whilst upgrading to the FP 2002 extensions and it seems to work okay.

I also had an invisible folder ( begins with ‘_’ ) that contained only unpublishable pages, which i changed such that at least one of the pages was publishable.
