How come you can buy 4 for $1 at Joe’s the DIY shop whilst 8 of them also cost the same at Burts the iron mongers round the corner. Wallmart seems to offer the best deal as they sell 16 of them for the knock price of $2 and believe it or not the same price tag is shown next to 24. All multiples of 4 but what is the significance and what is the product? Dave.

I don’t know the answer, but perhaps something that comes in different sizes, such as nuts and bolts?

    • #1084900

At a guess, although it doesn’t tie in strictly with the clue, I’d guess at (house) numbers?

    • #1084918

      Hi Dave

I would hazard a gues that it is the cost of a number to put on your door

      • #1085016

Correct in one….. house numbers….. here’s another one….. What is open when it’s shut and shut when it’s open? And yet another….. What gets longer when you cut some off the end?

        • #1085023

          >What gets longer when you cut some off the end

Hazard a guess The word LONGSOME grin

        • #1085215

“What gets longer when you cut some off the end?” Hair

Can’t believe there have been 60 views and only two attempts of an answer. Maybe the world of loungers need a couple of clues. The first one is; “The last four letters of the name of special schools in Indonesia. Second. The first two letters of a battle in which Philip II of Macedon defeated the Athenians and Thebans (338 BC) and also Sulla defeated Mithridates (86 BC). So! Simply put them together, and there you have the answer, the more you cut off the end the longer it gets….. hardly hair, that gets perpetually longer whether you do anything or nothing. Need another clue guys ??? Another one shortly, but you must request it. Dave. If you despair at this one, perhaps you might ruminate on another : – What gets wet as it is drying?

Ok Guys. I take your point about tagging new subjects on to existing ones. SORRY still new here. Rather than answer each post individual I’ll try to roll my responses in to one. It is a towel that gets wet whilst it is in the process of drying a body. As for a drawbridge being appropriate for an answer to the question of “What is open when it is shut.” it is true but the answer I recall being given when I was a child was “A level crossing” but that of drawbridge is just as valid. The original question: – What gets longer by cutting off the end is of course a TRENCH / DITCH. As for the comment about me being too esoteric, hey guys, unless I look the word up in a dictionary I haven’t a clue what that means so don’t put me in the bracket of a university trained student. I grew up in a coal mining village, failed the grade of progressing to secondary modern and so was thrust straight down the coal mine at 16 yrs. I suppose at best I just have an imaginative brain though I never was any good at crosswords especially the Cryptic clues which never made sense to me. Having said that I wondered how I could infer the word TRENCH without too easy a clue and simply thought that if I logged on to typed the letters TREN into the 6th to 9th box it would search for any words that ended with those letters. [Only two were found] Then I did a search for words beginning with CH and at random chose the word Chaeronea simply because it was unusual, not because I am versed in historical facts; far from it. Regarding the type of school which is found in Indonesia, look up the word PESANTREN for the meaning, before yesterday I’d never heard of it or what it meant. Keep em coming, it helps stimulate an aging brain and arrest absent mindedness. Regards Dave.

              David

Some of those clues are a bit too esoteric, as not all of us have had Classical education, I happen to know that you are talking about Battle of Chaeronea however “special schools” in Indonesia is even more complicated than the original question nuts….are we talking special needs or the actual language? shrug

Another reason why there are 60 views and no answers is because you are tagging the questions on to the end of other questions and they are not being read. It is best to create a new post for each question. Leave it as it is for now though

Drawbridge, when it is open, the bridge is shut…
