I want to create a cross-reference to a chapter heading such as ‘refer to Chapter 2 above’. The words Chapter 2 should be linked to the actual title of the chapter (which may change) and above might change to below if the chapter is moved. If possible, I would like to also use alternative words to above/below. Thanks in advance, Andy.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 28, 2002 at 4:43 pm #573459This is actually pretty easy to do in Word 2000, but you must use heading styles where the word “Chapter” and the chapter number are included in the style. Wen you get to the place where you want to insert the cross-reference, click on Insert and choose Cross-reference. Reference type should be set to Heading and Insert reference to should be set to Heading number. Just below the Insert reference to field is something that says Include above/below. Check it and you will have the cross reference you’re looking for. Note that you can also select whether or not to insert it as a hyperlink.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 4, 2002 at 1:58 pm #574090Great, thanks – and sorry about the delay in acknowledging. I didn’t use ‘Chapter 1’ as my text, and so first inserted a reference to the ‘Headling Text’ – I then had to insert a second reference to ‘above/below’. A more challenging question is how to create my own version of the words ‘above/ below’. For example, ‘discussed earlier/ discussed later’. Could this be done with an IF Field??

AskWoody LoungerMarch 5, 2002 at 3:40 pm #574370The following IF field appears to work for me.
{ IF { REF _1068474607 p }="above" "discussed earlier" "discussed later" }
The easiest way to enter this is to create a cross reference to display above / below, then use Control-F9 to create the { } for the if field, copy the cross reference into the correct place inside the { } brackets and then copy and paste the rest of the text from here.
