I am trying to create a simple two PC home LAN. The XP system is already connected to the web via port 1 of an Actiontec DSL modem/wireless router. I used the Control Panel’s Network Setup Wizard to configure it as the host of my LAN. I also accepted its offer to generate a netsetup.exe to make the other PC the LAN’s client. Then I connected the Vista PC to the modem’s port 2. When I ran the netsetup.exe on the Vista PC, it produced an error window headed “Cannot Complete the Network Setup Wizard” with a useless error message “An error occured during configuration of the network on this computer.” I assume that something in Vista is incompatible with the XP generated program.

Can anyone tell me how to setup a Vista PC to be a client hosted by an XP PC?

    Thank you,

In a home network configuration, there’s no “host” or “clients”. Have a look at this article and this article . It’s really pretty straightforward. You don’t require any “netsetup”.

Use Help and Support on the Vista machine. Search for “network setup” without the quotation marks. The first entry on my machine is “setting up a home network”.
