I am attempting to create a table tent in Word in portrait orientation. Without using WordArt which allows me to rotate and flip the WordArt how do I handle the text so that when the tent is assembled the text direction is properly displayed on both sides of the tent? A text box doesn’t seem to allow me to change the text to the needed direction.

I might be trying to solve the wrong problem here; I’m not familiar with the expression “Table Tent”. If you mean a folded piece of paper that will sit up on a desk like a notice, you could try this:
Change the page set-up to landscape.
Make a 2 column, 1 row table and type in your text.
Select the left hand cell and use Format->Text direction to rotate the text clockwise.
Select the right hand cell and use Format->Text direction to rotate the text anti-clockwise
Fold the page in half and the two cells should have the writing the right way up.

If this is not what you have in mind, please provide more details.
