• Create favicon

My knowledge of HTML is extremely limited, but I have managed to create a HTML index table, that I have set to automatically open in a tab, when IE is launched. I want to add a facicon (Just a basic smilie or something along those lines), but have no idea how?

    Code:

      Image Index

    Image Index

Any pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If you want something more than a ‘basic’ smilie, there are plenty of Favicon generators out there, animated and static, including this and this, with a bundle of ideas and downloads here.

(Personally, I do not like the animated text types, but a little animation can be nice )

Nathan explicitly mentioned IE – does that support animated favicons? (I know that Firefox does)

          Ummmmmmmm. I don’t think so.

Am I supposed to read all of Nathan’s posts?

Thanks. I am a long way off building my own, I’m struggling to pinch someone else’s.

I have tried various different syntax’s but I do not seem to be able to get this to work.

      Code:

        Image Index

      Image Index

      What am I doing wrong?

When you add a favicon to a site, I don’t think it shows up automatically straight away. The old trick with IE to force the favicon to show was to left-click-and-hold the IE icon in the address bar and drag it an inch or two to the right a few times. I’m not sure if this still works….

Thanks for the suggestion, but after a vast number of attempts, I have decided that the answer to your question is no.

It works for me in Firefox, but not in IE8.

aaah well, Thanks for trying! As long as I know that it is an IE8 thing and not a ME thing, I’m happy.

This works for me in both Fx3/Fx3.5 and IE7 (can’t test in IE8 on this PC):

It works in IE because even if you omit that tag, IE will look in the root of the web for that exact file name.

I some how I got my webpage favicon to appear ok, if you go to the site, using the top menus of your browser click on the View menupage source and look at the header of any page.
You’ll find every header for each page is different. There are a number of free programs that will make headers for you site. Or visit page source and copy and paste, then make the header realistic to the content of your page.
There are many views on what you your header should or should not have in it.
Built my page using FrontPage though do not let that program process the pages, better to make a new folder at the top of your c|- AA my web or something and just save into that.
HTML-Kit is a free program you might like to check out. Also FileZilla is free open source uploader. Try a free search engine optimization Google search, that could be worth while. and you might find useful

Further to Jezza’s comment, try changing

        to either
        (no preceding forward slash)

        or
        (full path)

(Browsing to “http://robplum.com/favicon.ico” comes back with a “File not found” message.)

      Hi Robert
I am unable to see your favicon.ico when I view it in FF or IE , I did a check on your site using FavIcon Validator and it informs me you indeed have an ico file but it is in the wrong format!

      I thought I better tell
