    Win98 SE on P200MMX; 96Mb RAM; 500Mb free HDD

I’m just cruising along on my PC when suddenly all hell breaks loose on my screen. New windows opening; resizing; right-click menus popping up every where; task bar getting moved around to different corners of the screen. I then have to until I get to the Shut down dialog.

I’ve booted on my virus floppy (AVG) and scanned for viruses; scanned with Adaware and Search & Destroy but found nothing.

I’m inclined to think there is a problem with my mouse (software or hardware). Has anyone seen this one before and can offer any advice? TIA

Do you and your neighbour both have a wireless computer mouse?

Nope. It’s a Compaq Deskpro box and a serial mouse (also Compaq I think–I’m at work at the monent).

Strangely enough, I occasionally have what I think is a similar problem and have NEVER been able to figure out what triggers it. I have a Win98SE machine on my home LAN that is hardly ever used – only when I happen to be upstairs or my son is in the house. Sometimes, I will go up to the machine and hit a shift key to wake up the monitor and I’ll see window after window opening that appear to be the Windows Search function. I can’t stop the process and nothing does any good except to power off the machine. Heretofore, I’ve thought it may be my KVM misbehaving since the keyboard and mouse do nothing. I know I haven’t helped you but just wanted to say that you’re not alone – I think!

Hope this isn’t too obvious, but I have seen this behavior when the mouse ball guides get dirty. Can’t figure the logic of this but it does happen.

I’ve only just trained my kids to wipe their own bottoms and now I have to do the mouse ??

I’ll have a look but I don’t recall it doing the usual dirty mouse tricks (ie not moving the cursor at all).

        Thanks
