I am running W2K SP1 on a PIII-550 with 192mb. Any additional software I install locks up the machine at approx 90% finished, only a power off can end this freeze. This happened first last week, the os was 6 months old and the hard drive was loaded with software. I have just formatted the drive, reinstalled the W2K, Office 2K and I still get the problem. I think it may need a hard drive, any guesses? (Hard drive is not making any unusual sounds and is 3 years old)

Is it “any” software you try to install or just certain software programs?

Have you tried installing as a user with Full Administrative rights?

Can you try disabling the virus software or any other programs that are loaded in the system tray or in the RUN area of the registry?

Maybe try installing in Safe Mode to see if the program installs there, and then try and trace what may be causing the conflict.

Good luck… and keep us posted.

I have full administrator rights. I dont have any anit-virus installed yet. Some of the programs that crash/freeze are: Palm V software, Intellisync, Photoshop 6, and IE6 beta-which is unique, it only crashes when you open the new “personal bar”.

I am going to try to install them in safe mode tonight.

Do other program installations complete past the 90 percent? Like Office97/2000 ?

Office 2000 is fine, all patches from Windows Update work fine. One “odd” thing is IRQ 11. It has 6 devices associated with it (SCSI,NIC,Video card, Sound Card). I posted that here last week and everyone said it was Win2K plug-n-play. I first thought bad memory stick or a bad hard drive but everything already installed works fine, I can even burn CD’s with Nero.
