I have a friend whose system won’t boot, not even with the XP CD. She is clueless when it comes to computers and just wants her PC to work. She only uses it for the Internet and Microsoft Money, and Office. She doesn’t have a lot of files saved and is OK with losing her data. The error message says something about her not having an Operating System. So I am trying to help her long distance. If she booted with a boot floppy that gave CD access couldn’t she reload WinXP? And if she did that would she lose her files?

If she can’t boot from CD then she probably needs to change to boot order in the BIOS. Can you talk her through looking in the BIOS to change to boot options? If she has probelms with the CD drive then boot from a floppy will do no good. If you do a repair installation (search the lounge for more information) of XP her data files will be intact.

I think Joe hit the nail on the head saying that the BIOS order has to be reset in order to boot to a CD first.
Also she probably won’t be able to boot to a floppy for the same reason as a CD.
Talk her into booting to the CD and run a repair install. ( the second mention of repair not the first which is the repair console )

I think my friend is using a different approach to solving her computer woes – she’s buying a new PC! I guess that’s one approach!!

If she was using MSMoney on the PC, then whoever gets it next could have a lot of fun with her bank account. If she doesn’t get it to the point she can boot it, she has no way of cleaning the hard drive.
