Corrupt Folder Names (Outlook 2000 SR-2)

We run Outlook 2000 SR-1 as a client for Exchange 2000.
Today, one of our users returned from a week of business travel in Russia and found that many of their folder names (including Inbox and Calendar) had changed to a string of ?s. While they were away, they had been accessing email through OWA without problems.
Does anyone know what caused this, how to prevent it happening again, and if there is a way of returning the names to normal without the user having to manually rename them all?

Maybe, maybe, and to the last question, possibly.

First I recommend that the user go into Start, Settings, Contol Panel and make sure that -ALL- regional settings as to language, number displays, time, and time zones, etc., are reset.

If this doesn’t correct the folders, close down Outlook and all Outlook windows (open e-mail items, calendars, etc.). Then from the Start, Run box, enter:

“c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeOUTLOOK.EXE” /cleanfolders

and press the enter key.

If Outlook doesn’t start, you’ll have to find out where outlook.exe resides to edit the path.

I tried this, but the /cleanfolders switch returned an error message about unknown switch. I tried /resetfolders, but it had no effect.
We looked at the user’s folders through OWA and the folders, which are all default system folders on closer examination show with Russian names. I think therefore that accessing the folder from OWA on a Russian PC has caused the folders to be renamed.
Can anyone confirm this behaviour?

Not specifically with Russian, but have heard of it happening with Japanese Windows. I don’t remember where I got this from but I’ll check my contacts. (I work for a Japanese owned and run Australian company.)
