Copying music files to an MP3 player

I have a folder with a group of 20 songs in it. Because I like for them to play in a specific order, I went into Windows Explorer and changed the name of each one by adding a letter suffix in front of it according to when I want it to play. For example, the first song is “a. I Can’t Help Loving You” and the second song is “b. Dreams.”

This works fine when I am playing the music on my computer through Windows Media Player. However, when I copy these songs to my external MP3 player or to my cell phone, they get shuffled out of order. I noticed that all of the songs that I downloaded off of Youtube play in the order of the letter suffixes that I gave each of their names. However, all of the songs that I ripped to my computer from a cd go by the original names that they had on the cd. The new names that I gave them with the letter prefixes do not stick when they are transferred to my MP3 player or cell phone. Is there a way to get them to stick so that they will play in the order that I want?

You may need to modify the MP3 tags to change the track number.

I suggest you try creating a “Playlist” that specifies the order of play rather than trying to change the order by changing the file (or song)name. I believe most MP3 players will display and play by playlist.

Thanks. I found that going into the Properties / Details tab of each of the song files on my computer and changing the title of the songs makes them stick on the MP3 player as well.
