Anyone ever used a PC to rip and burn karaoke CD’s?

When I place a CD+G in the disc drive, Explorer sees it as a collection of .cda files. But I know there is more on the disc. There is something that creates the graphic (thus, +G designation) but whatever it is, it’s not showing up in the explorer window…

I’ve tried using Nero to copy the disc and all I get is a CD with the .cda files. Works fine as far as the music is concerned but it did not / will not copy the graphic elements from the karaoke disc.

I just want to rip certain karaoke files from discs (that I already own!) and then burn my own karaoke disc with just the tunes I want. Seems harmless, but impossible…

Any ideas how to make duplicates of the files on a CD+G? Anyone ever tried?

For actual full complete CD copies, you will need ClonyXXLv2006 in conjunction with CloneCD 4.0. If you are unable to locate it, let me know and I probably can send you to a site that may have it.

Thanks Bruce, I have found both proggys and they are downloading now. I’m hoping they will allow the copying of the CD+Gs. The set of karaoke disc I have has a dozen Elvis songs scattered across many discs. I think it would be better to have all the Elvis tracks on one disc. As it is now, I’m imitating Elvis and then next thing you know, I’m whining along with a Doris Day tune. Oh, it’s awful…

If these cloning programs will just copy all the contents from one disc to another, that will not be of much use…I’m betting that picking off the CD+G tracks individually can’t be done with a PC. I’ll let you know.

Just as a matter of interest, what happens if you “Select all” on the CD and copy it to a folder on your hard drive – can you see more then?

Hi Leif,

That didn’t work, either. Windows Explorer immediately sees the disc as an audio CD. I used Select All, Copy and then pasted the contents to a temp directory and it simply copied 18 *.cda files. These discs obviously contain music but they also contain data. And the data part is being ignored in every way unless you put the disc in a special karaoke player…

This reminds me of another instance and another type of CD. We had one of those 1st grade learning discs for kids. It had an actual application on the disc along with 6 childrens songs (on the same disc). We were never able to install the program. Windows always read the disc as an audio disc and immediately started playing the songs when the disc was inserted.

Even with auto play turned off, we could not access the install routine, Windows and Explorer would only see the music files on the disc. We finally gave up and assumed it was a problem with the disc…

Anyway, heres a copy of the explorer window of the files after they were copied to the hard drive.

Ricky, I just had a brainstorm. Would an ISO image of the CD be acceptable? The one program I always fall back on if I need a bit for bit copy is IsoBuster. You can then use just about any burning program of your choice to make copies. A program that can read and/or mount ISO files should allow you to browse the file system on those discs.

An asscociate of mine who turned me on to Clony+CloneCD uses it for Karaoke copies. Have you tried it yet? Or are you attempting to get files piecemeal?

Hey Bruce, I could not find an English version for Clony but I did complete the install for CloneCD 4. It lacked the explorer type interface that would allow working with individual tracks but it does perform as advertised…it will make an exact duplicate of an entire CD. Good for backups but not for producing compilations. I really want to rip individual tracks from the CD+Gs and then copy the faves to CDRs, keeping the karaoke functionality. There’s got to be a way…

If you d/l the ClonyXXLv2006 version, there is an option to install using English.

I suppose I was under the impression if you copied the entire CD, then you might be able to view/have access to the files you needed to rip the tracks and maintain the karaoke functionality, but I have never personally worked with karaoke media, so not sure how to accomplish this task.

Thanks Jefferson & Mark: I downloaded the ISOBuster but haven’t completed the install, yet. Sounds like it may work. I also followed the link to Dart’s website…it sounds like the Dart Karaoke Studio might be exactly what I need. Fortunately, it includes a 30 day trial. After that trial period is done, the cost to keep it is $140…. I’ll post the details if/when I find something that works.
