Client wants to open two separate instances of Excel so he can have one spreadsheet display on one monitor and the second display on the second monitor. However, when he copies from one instance of Excel he can not Past Special into the second instance.

“If I am using the same instance of excel with multiple documents everything works as expected. When I open two instances of excel with a document open in each I have the problems. The reason why I wanted two instances open is because I wanted to have one doc on one screen and one on the other. If you only have one instance open all documents stay on the same screen.”

Is there a way to have 2 instances of Excel and still use the paste special command or is there a way to have one instance of Excel yet have one spreadsheet display on one monitor and the other file display on the other monitor?

What I have suggested to t he client is open Excel and then resize the application so it is not maximized on one of the monitors. Stretch Excel so it displays on both monitors, expanding the height and width as desired. Then open the first file and size it to fill the left hand monitor and then open the second file so it fills the right hand monitor.

Since this is one instance of Excel, copy and paste special operations should work as normal yet allow the files to be more easily viewed than if they were both displaying on one monitor using the windows “arrange” options.

We’ll see.

As your client has found, if you open two separate instances of Excel and try to copy and paste/paste special from one to the other, the recipient treats the data as if they’re coming from a different application, so only the generic options are available, not the options that make use of specific Excel features.

Your suggestion of not maximizing Excel and stretching the window across both monitors is the best you can do, I think.
