I am trying to copy and paste a page from my company website to a word document and then type additional verbiage within the document. However because of formatting, it doesn’t allow me to do it. I’m not a beginner, but I’m no expert either so this is really stumping me. Any ideas?

You don’t say which browser you are using, Internet Explorer or something else, such as Firefox.

Firefox has an excellent extension (add-on) called “Copy As Plain Text” that will do exactly what you want.

I frequently Copy all the data in the Web page and Paste that to a program or I may simply Save the page [File, Save As…] to my computer then edit it later or copy what I need. Word can open some HTML/HTM files but I use Microsoft Expression Web 4 to edit the page to my needs.

…I use Microsoft Expression Web 4 to edit the page to my needs.

Not too clear what’s going on here–eg is the final output daledo is looking for a revised web page, or a new Word doc, or something else?

If you need unusual formatting like checkboxes and such to come across, then a web editor like Expression Web [free, capable] seems the best bet. Right click on the web page you want to copy, click on View Source in the dropdown menu, and it’ll put the page’s underlying code into your default text editor [eg Notepad].

Copy the code and paste into your web editor and all the formatting should be preserved, and you can type your updates into the page.

In Word, you should able to select Paste Special and select Unformatted Text. Use Word Help to find where Paste Special is located in your version. In Word 2007, its under the Paste Icon drop down at the far left of the Home Ribbon.

Thank you so much for your replies. I’m using IE as my browser Word 2010.

**JohnFleming – I will check out FireFox and advise.

**Berton – When I’m on my web page, there is no File, Save As. I have to highlight and right click C&P to get it in Word. I’ll check out Microsoft Expression Web 4 and advise.

**jwitalka – Paste Special only gives me 3 choices…
      1)Keep Source Formatting
      2)Merge Formatting
      3)Keep Text only
None of these options are what I want. The web page I’m trying to copy has check boxes, text boxes and drop downs that need to be able to C&P as well.

One would think that C&Ping a web page into Word and then being able to type and manipulate within the document would be relatively simple. This is sooo frustrating. I’ve been searching for answers for over a month to no avail. I need to figure it out to be successful in my job so a little frantic at this point.:o:

Thank you again for your replies:)

What do you mean by “it doesn’t allow me to do it”? What happens when you put the cursor between any two words and type?

I C&P’d an example below, however all of it didn’t paste. There should be a check box to the right of each :

After I paste from the web page to Word and then try to type to the “right” of the text box, the cursor jumps to the left of the first word of the following line. Also when I try to maneuver text within the document, the whole document highlights blue and it freezes. I can’t delete spaces, type where I want to type etc as I would if I hadn’t C&P and just typed the document from scratch.

I’ve been told many times the problem is formatting. When the developer created the web page, whatever formatting (spacing, indents, returns) was done, it is brought over with the content I’m trying to C&P. I’ve tried every option on my paste special but nothing works.

Is your company website an intranet. If not perhaps you can give the URL for us to see what happens when we try.

Unfortunately, I can’t. You need a password to get to it. I work for a Criminal Data Provider that provides information to Background Screening Companies and houses proprietary data so I’m unable to share that with you.

Is the right indent marker on the ruler just to the right of the :Filter Single Character First Name:, and are there no paragraph marks at the ends of the lines? That may account for the cursor behavior.

I’ve checked that Pam and it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

The two things suggest strongly the possibility your employer has restricted some things that you can do.

You may be right Berton, however according to our developers, that’s not the case. I should be able to copy and paste anything….Which I can. I just can’t manipulate within the document after I’ve pasted it into Word. I think their MUST be a better software program out there that will allow me to C&P and carry NO FORMATTING what so ever into the the doc.

        I really appreciate your help!

Have you tried pasting into Notepad?
