I am sure this has been asked before so please point me to a relevant post if it has.

I have a slow internet connection being in the country.  My Windows 10 is set to a metered connection and I keep checking to make sure this is set.  Unfortunately that does not stop Windows 10 downloading seemingly large updates, however critical or non-critical they may be, at highly inconvenient and unacceptable times locking up my internet completely for often more than an hour or more like today.

Accepting these updates need to be downloaded and applied, how can I control Windows 10 to download them at a time convenient to me, not to Windows.

    Thanks,  Rob

I assume you have Win10 Home (some version)
Article on how to keep Win10 v1903 from installing.
      That’s just a start.

First, it depends on what version of Windows 10 do you have and if it is home/Pro.
In Pro version you can defer updates both security and feature via settings or GPEdit.
In home you should set metered connection to both Lan & Wlan (wi-fi)

There are numerous 3rd party apps that will block all updates until you are ready, like : Microsoft’s wushowhide, O&O shutup 10, windows update minitool…

Many thanks PKCano and Alex5723.  I have Win 10 Home and will check out your suggestions.

      Thanks again, Rob

There are individual topics about each of the WU blocking programs in the Tools Forum, but here is one that lists several:

Be careful if you use WUB (Windows Update Blocker).  I found that Windows Update would not work at all (just displayed a blank page) and eventually traced it to the Update Orchestrator service being disabled and greyed out, therefore could not be started manually.  Without this service running, Windows Update will not work even when you want it to.  After some advice with registry adjustments (thanks Rick), I got the Update Orchestrator service running again, but next time I used WUB it went bad again and I had to repeat the registry adjustments.  I “think” the problem  was in the /P switch when Windows Update is disabled – WUB /D /P – which is said to “Protect” the Windows Update service from being started by something else.  My guess is that the /P switch was also fiddling with or disabling the Update Orchestrator service.  Could be wrong, could be that the latest version of WUB has fixed it, but I have not used WUB since, with no such problems.

Also had the same issue with Windows Update Blocker and the Orchestrator service a while back.

And, I’ve stopped using WUB with Windows 10 1903 because the latest version was also ‘crashing’ Focus Assist in Settings (I don’t use it but I like to go through and check everything in Settings from time to time).

I’ve gone back to using O&O’s ShutUp10 after my last 1903 clean install a few weeks back.

On the Settings screen you can change the “Active Hours” when it will install updates. Have you done that?

That does not stop the time it downloads the updates Vincenzo as that time is set to overnight.

I have now installed O&O’s ShutUp10 following earlier suggestions in this thread so will just have to wait and see if it works.

Which particular settings in ShutUp10 are applicable?
