(This is my first post.) I had Controlled Folder Access turned on. I downloaded an update to CCleaner. It seemed to install correctly, but now CCleaner won’t run.

I went through the ‘add an allowed ap” process, adding CCleaner64.exe, CCupdate.exe, and ccsetup564.exe, however, CCleaner still will not run. After that I turned Controlled Folder access Off. CCleaner still failed to run , so I uninstalled and re-installed CCleaner.

It still fails to run. Protection History shows “Protected memory access blocked” and “Protected folder: \device\harddisk0\DRO” each time I attempted to run CCleaner.
What am I missing here?ย  Please help\advise. Thank you.

I don’t have an answer, just a comment on CCleaner. The consensus here seems to be “don’t use CCleaner”. Windows has an easy mechanism to clear temp files and using CCleaner on the registry is likely to cause more problems than it solves.

      cheers, Paul

Did you reboot after changing the controlled folder access setting?

I have found Controlled Folder Access to be more trouble than it is worth. When it is enabled access is supposed to be OK for programs known to Microsoft. I have not found this to work. It just creates more work/clicks for me to add allowed programs. Some of which I seemed to have to add multiple times. So, I just gave up and turned it off.

Joe it is a bit easier to use now then when it was new but still a PITA, but I still have it on.
CCleaner is gone from my box for a while had not used it in years..

This thread gives a discussion of Cleanmgr to do what Paul suggests https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/prepare-for-the-inevitable/#post-1878206

To answer Paul T and joep517’s responses: I simply use CCleaner to remove temp files and cookies and yes, I have rebooted several times. I have never used CCleaner on the Registry. I have turned Controlled Folder Access off, but even so, it continues to block the running of CCleaner. I continue to ask why. Question for Paul T: what is Windows’ “easy mechanism to clear temp files”? Thank you both.

what is Windowsโ€™ โ€œeasy mechanism to clear temp filesโ€?

      1. Open Explorer.
      2. Right click on C:
      3. Properties > Disk Clean-up.

      cheers, Paul

Well, my issue with CCleaner still continues but I thank wavy and Paul T for their responses.ย  Duh, I knew that, Paul T –ย have used both Disk Clean-up and Storage Sense many times.

I think I may have solved the Controlled Folder Access issue which prohibited CCleaner from running. I unpinned the tile from Start, created a new shortcut, checked “Run as Administrator” within the shortcut’s Advanced Properties, then re-pinned it to Start. CCleaner now runs, though the UAC nags (even after I checked the “Skip User Account Control warning” within CCleaner’s Advanced settings). But I can live with it and think I may even eliminate the UAC nag using the Task Scheduler. Thanks to all.
