Contacts and Palm Desktop (2003)

Most of us who use Outlook with Palm don’t spend time in the Palm DT application, so there may not be many folks who can provide comparisons. To answer your questions about Outlook through Outlook 2003:

There’s no split screen – there are a variety of Views, under View | Arrange By | Current, but they are either card views or table views. Customizing the Views to something like the Palm DT is way beyond the Forms customizations Outlook provides; it might be possible, but it would be an enormous effort.

There’s no “progressive” Search entry field, not in the Find Window, nor in the Advanced Find window (Ctrl-Shift-F).

You’ll have to get used to the way Outlook works (and doesn’t) – even those of us who are experienced users find plenty of annoyances. But in my brief looks some time ago at Palm DT, I think Outlook captures more data – perhaps not.

Thank you for your message, John. I find not having a “progressive” search to be a bit of an annoyance, becuase I get many more entries than I actually need. Regarding the Inbox search option, is there a way to narrow down searches to only show, let’s say, the first five or ten most recent emails that have a particular search item? I usually find that when searching for an email I sent last week, with, for example, the search item “book”, I will get dozens and dozens of entries from even years ago, since I can’t tell Outlook to only pull up the most recent emails. Not to mention that it takes a while to get the search done.

Any suggestions?

After the Search is done, click on the “received date” header to sort by message date. With a little more work you can also set up a Custom Search folder with criteria to find all messages recv’d on the last “n” days. Outlook appears to search all items by processing their internal item identifier, and so starts at the oldest items and works it’s way to the most recent.

Dear Loungers,

I am using Palm Desktop and am thinking of switching over in order not to have 2 programs always open at the same time and also, because I have had some issues with the Palm Desktop version that I need for Sony Clié, which doens’t have new drivers for Wndows Vista (and Sony said they may never come out with drivers, since the product is being discontinued). So I am thinking of getting a pocket pc instead and migrating all my addresses and calendar info over to Outlook.

Does anyone use the Contacts function of Outlook and if so, can s/he make any comparisons/distinctions with Palm Desktop?

Is there a way to get Outlook’s contacts function to show split screen with the name on the left and all of the other information for a particular entry open on the right?

Is there any easier way to find a contact than to type in a word into the “Find” window, pressing enter, and then manually scrolling for the appropriate entry? For example, if I know my contact is filed under “John X,” but I don’t remember “X” (the last name), and I type “John” and then 10 “John’s” appear, can I then not continue to type “Smith” until Outlook narrows it down to 1 or 2 entries? Palm Desktop allows this but I haven’t figured out how to do it with Outlook.
