    Hello,

Does anyone have email addresses for either Woody or Ed Bott? I’m going crazy trying to solve a couple of issues in Word 2003. They are show stoppers for a major project and I need to seek help from the “masters”. Thanks in advance.

        Hi Hans,

OK, you asked for it angel !

I have a large document, approx. 50 pages) that is comprised almost entirely of (live) links to an excel spreadsheet. There are two issues I’ve run into as the document has grown. One is the “There are too many edits in this document . . .” problem and the TOC function refuses to function.

I have carefully reconstructed all of the section headers, making them single line paragraphs and manually marking them for TOC. This worked fine when the document was smaller, but simply stopped working as the document has grown. Now when I try to delete the existing TOC and regnerate a new one, nothing happens. No error message and no results, just a blinking cursor at the insertion point. Thinking that this could be related to the “Too many edits . . .” issue, I’ve tried all known (Microsoft documented) methods for clearing the “UNDO” stack etc, with no results. I’m at wit’s end and the project (with many, many hours invested, is at a standstill. Any help in solving these problems is greatly appreciated!

        Thanks in advance,

You could try copying the entire document except for the final paragraph mark into a new document.

All those live links cause an enormous overhead. Perhaps you’ll be forced to break the links at some point.

            Hi Hans,

I’ve tried that, unfortunately unsuccessfully. Word must have some sort of memory constraint. I’m doing this on a machine with a dual-core p-rocessor and 3 GB or RAM. I understand that there’s a lot of overhead with this type of document, but I’ve got a lot of computing power as well.

            Regards,

Let’s see if others have suggestions.

By the way, if you click the WOPR Frontpage link at the bottom of this (or any) Lounge page, you’ll be taken to Woody’s Office Portal. It contains a link to send him an e-mail.
