    Hello all,
I have just purchased a wireless modem router from Amazon hoping to (finally) get my home network set up.
After I clicked on ‘confirm’ to buy the item, I had a scary thought.
    My question is:
My Device Manager says I have an “Intel ® 82566DC 2 Gigabit Network connection” which I assume is my network card.
Is that compatible with my newly purchased modem router?
    “Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Firewall Router with 4-port 10/100 switch”

Apologies for the simplicity of the question. I am usually better with stuff like this, but this network thing has me floored. I suppose it will too, until I get through my first setup..

    Thanks for any advice!

Your 2 Gbps NIC on your PC will negotiate with the 10/100 Mbps port on the router, and will agree mutually and happily to interchange data at 100 Mbps!

      BATcher

Plethora means a lot to me.

        Phew! Thanks!
        100Mbps is good I hope?

So I can connect this to the Ethernet port on my computer, connect my printer to the router and then use the printer (and my internet connection) from all the computers on the network?

        Thank you for your help

100 Mbps is the fastest you’ll get from an ethernet port on that Netgear router. It’s a bit academic anyway, because you will probably be getting less than 10 Mbps from your ADSL connection to your ISP

Does your printer have an ethernet port? If so, yes, you also connect that to one of the four available ethernet sockets on the router.

But the transfer of files between networked computers….oh boy

              Hello,
              Thanks for your replies.
Do I want/need anything faster for those file transfers?

This depends on the kind of file transfers you are doing.

If you are occasionally accessing small files on shared folders then 100Mbit will be fine.
If you are creating image backups of multiple PCs across the network at the same time then you would be better off using a Gbit speed router.
