I have a 300 page document that I created a concordance table for containing the words I want to index. When I run the AutoMark, however, Word is not picking up all instances of the words in my document from the concordance table. (It will pick up the word “computer” and index it on the 1st line. The second line of text also includes the word “computer” but Word does not index it.) My “Mark All” feature didn’t work either.

I didn’t find that anyone else in this forum has experienced this problem. Any clues?

The help file says that “Word marks only the first occurrence of an entry in each paragraph.”.

Is your second line in the same paragraph as the first?

Yes, it is. But I need a workaround – they want every entry marked…

In that case you will need to build your own search and replace macro to do the job of the automark command using an iterative search and replace function to find each occurence of the target word and replace it with itself followed by the relevant index tag.

You have to ask the client why they really need it though. Do they realise that a word can be tagged to go into the index lots of times but if they all appear on the same page of the document – there is only one index entry with only one page number.

            > but if they all appear on the same page

            Hmmm.

            Tricky.

I read the reference to “once per paragraph” above, but how about an indexable word that appears several times throughout a large paragraph, and that paragraph spans two pages? Ought I to be able to see a reference for each page?

(I’m being picky, I know, and usually if I start to read the paragraph on page 99 I will continue reading it to page 100)

Joanne, I have had the problem of not all instances of a word being marked happen many times. I found the solution is to run Automark two, three or however many times are needed until no more instances are marked. Hope this works for you.
