Computer will not shut down

I have a XP box which has been behaving perfectly until recently. Now, when I select Start, Shut Down, then click the shutdown icon, nothing happens, even if I wait for hours. The box is fully up to date with both MS updates and all programs, it is also free of viruses, malware, etc. I also tried hitting the Restart icon and that does nothing as well. I’m using MS Security Essentials and keep the disk defragmented.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem or what could be wrong?

OK, today it seems to have sorted itself out. It shuts down and restarts as it should. Peculiar beasts sometimes!!

I find most computer problems immediately resolve themselves immediately after I have posted a request for help on a forum.
