I always put my machine in sleep mode when not in use. (Windows 7, 64 bit.) At least once a day, something wakes it up. I know that the ISP could be a culprit, but I cannot find where to go to check on whether that is the cause, or what else could be causing it to wake from sleep mode. Can anyone suggest where I could look to try and find what is waking the machine?

Check the CMOS/BIOS Setup for items such as Wake-on-LAN, (or wake-onanything) and disable them.

My desktop machine does the same thing, but that doesn’t bother me. What I find strange is that the computer sometimes turns itself on from a turned-off state. What could be the cause of that?

Same issue, Wake On LAN or Wake On Modem. These settings are editable in the BIOS which you access at boot up, usually by pressing Esc or Del before Windows boots.

In a command window enter ‘powercfg -lastwake’ and see what woke it up.
