What does a user need to know about Event Viewer, especially Errors and Warnings sub folders?

In my case, I observe in my Event Viewer logs, a few errors right from the day I purchased my pc, and a couple have date stamp from even before the purchase date.

In my Summary of Events log I observe 271 Errors and 77 warnings in the last 7 days.

Should I be concerned?

Should you be concerned? NO.

If your PC is working, it is working irrespective of what is in the event viewer. Some bits of software are a bit OTT with flagging errors, most of the time the system just tries again or tries something else that works.

If your PC stops working, you MIGHT find the reason in the event viewer, you might not – it isn’t terribly helpful in most cases, the only thing see is a processor restart sequence including “the last shutdown was unexpected”.

Whatever you do, don’t be scammed by a telephone caller with a thick Indian accent claiming to be from Microsoft and asking you to open up Event Viewer – it is the first step towards parting you from your hard-earned cash!

You should be concerned enough to investigate the errors. 271 errors seems like a lot. You need to supply details about the groups that contain the errors.

In most instances the errors & warnings are benign and many will be generated that are of little significance to the average user.
If you are not the primary owner or administrator of the computer then leave them alone, sorting it out will be someone else’s job.
If it is your computer then it’s a good idea to keep an eye on them to get a picture of what is going on, and to learn what is potentially harmfull vs benign, …and how to filter some of them out.
When opening the event viewer one should navigate to the “Administrative” view pane first.
If there are problems or blue screen errors, the event viewer should be one of the first places to look.

Learning to use and understand many of the entries inside the event viewer will take time and a familiarity with the processes active and running on your computer. Performing a Google Search on specific error codes and wording may be helpfull in learning.
