When logged in as Administrator and running Computer Management under Administration Tools, any of the system information folders when selected displays the following message in the view pane: “Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing. Contact your System Adminstrator…” Well, I am the system administrator. I know of nothing that would have moved system files so I can only assume something has become corrupted. The other parts of Computer Management work ok. I have a second (older) machine running Win2k that works fine and is very similar in all respects to the one that doesn’t. They are networked together. If I knew what system files were used by System Information, perhaps I could just copy them from the working machine (unless it is a registry problem). Ideas?

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 4, 2002 at 9:25 pm #568209The same information for System information is found by running
MSINFO32.EXE
Or by Clicking on Start-> Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information
Does the System Info show up this way – outside of Computer Management?
This system information is gathered using WMI controls (Windows Management Interface). You can check if your WMI controls are working properly by going to:
Computer Management -> Services and Applications -> Right click on WMI Control and choose properties.
Mine shows successfully connected to local computer with WMI version 1085.0005, and WMI location C:WINNTSystem32WBEM
I’m not a WMI expert, but it is a place to start your MS knowledge base searches

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 9, 2002 at 3:37 am #569274Running it as MSINFO32.EXE gives the same result.
When checking the WMI service, mine says, “Failed to connect to because “Interface: Class not registered” When listing services, this service is not running. Starting it manually doesn’t help, and when checking dependencies I get the same “Interface: Class not registered” error message.
That appears to be a registry flaw. Any ideas how to register the WMI service? As an additional piece of info, when viewing the event log, I see the following:
“WMI ADAP was unable to process the performance libraries: 0x80041001”, Event ID 60, Source WinMgmt

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 31, 2002 at 9:56 pm #567518You’re in luck – sorta – if you want to try re-installing SP2. Microsoft has just released a post-SP2 security rollup that applies scads of fixes for Win2k in one fell swoop. I just hope this doesn’t mean there will be no service pack 3!!

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 7, 2002 at 9:21 pm #569002Good question. I would think that it’s in development, but the recent rollup release has me wondering what is really going to happen – NT got the same treatment. Security rollup, no service pack 7. Sorry users. Granted, Win2000 is a much newer platform; I would suspect that tis is due to the increased focus on security at the Mothership. I’ve noted several release dates slipping recently, even the beloved powertoys.
I think the safe bet says that the service pack isn’t coming out soon. But since most beta testers are likely bound by NDAs, we may never know!
