I finally got my new Dell Optiplex with all the bells and whistles and DSL from SBC (formerly Pac Bell) but I’ve had a few problems.

    1. Outlook 2002 keeps crashing. I don’t think it’s an Outlook problem, since I had exactly the same setup on my old Win 98SE system and that just kept on going. I’ve downloaded all the Windows updates and installed the Office XP SP-2, which I had on my old system.

    2. To start my DSL connection I have to run a program. It runs fine if I run it manually, but if I put it in the All Users Startup folder it doesn’t work correctly. It doesn’t put an icon on the running tasks section of the task bar, so I can’t check the status or stop it.

    3. The screensaver doesn’t work most of the time.

    4. I have a dozen or so shortcut icons on the taskbar, and often the tool-tips come up behind the taskbar instead of on top. Not always, but most of the time. It’s a real pain in the neck.

Except for DSL, all of my settings are the same as they were with Win 98SE.

    Anyone got any ideas?

What other devices do you have on or attached to your system?

Are you running any PDA or FAX type software?

Are you sure you have the “Hang up after down load of email” un checked?

Of all the people (that I know of) that have been having problems with Outlook, it was NOT Outlook but some other software or device.

Starting the DSL connection is NOT a Outlook problem, but a DSL setup problem.

Two USB2 devices: a scanner and a printer. A parallel port laser printer, which I’ve had for over 10 years.

        No PDA or fax software.

Did you mean ‘Hang up after a a manual send/receive’? That is unchecked.

I agree with you. As I said in my original post, I don’t think it’s an Outlook problem, as the same setup worked on my old Win 98 machine. What’s changed is that I now have DSL and Win XP Pro. That’s why I posted my message here instead of the Outlook forum.

The DSL setup was Win XP built in. I didn’t use the software provided by my ISP but used the Win XP new connection wizard. It works fine if I start it manually; it’s only when I try to start it from my Startup folder that I have a problem. That sounds like a Win XP issue to me.

As I said in my original post, I don’t think my problems are caused by Outlook. I had the same setup on my old Win 98 system and that worked fine. What’s changed is that I’m now running Win XP Pro and using DSL. That’s why I posted my question in this forum and not the Outlook forum.

OK, I’ve done a few more things. I tried Outlook Express and that crashed almost immediately. I then disconnected my DSL connection and left it off for almost 18 hours. No crash. I left Outlook running yesterday and this morning it was still up and running. So it seems my DSL is the cause. But I didn’t use the software provided by my ISP. I couldn’t get it to work and when I called their tech support they said I don’t use it with Win XP. I set it up with XP’s built in ‘Add a new connection Wizard’.

I don’t know know why the DSL modem would cause Outlook to crash, but I agree there doesn’t seem to be much else left. My DSL provider is SBC and of course I can’t reach their tech support (“Overloaded” is what the recording says).

Re-Install XP with DSL service but WITHOUT Outlook. If it runs OK & with OE as default, THEN try Outlook. My bet is that Outlook is the cause of your problems.
Forget about what setups you had with WInSE. Concentrate on an XP install.
