I have installed MS Office 97 Professional on a computer running MS Windows XP Home SP2 fully updated.

When I try to open a document file a message appears the the application is not installed on this computer & to run setup again. I have run setup again & as when the installation is finished a messge appears that the installation has been successful. But the behaviour is unchanged.

Can anyone explain what the situation is please? Is there a fix?

Have you installed Office 97 while logged in with administrator rights? If not, the installation may not be successful.
Are you logged in with administrator rights when you try to use Office 97?

First I apologise for my absence.

Second the problem has been resolved by uninstalling Office 97 & installing Office 2000. So that whatever caused the problem will have to remain unknown.

Third I would like to thank those who contributed to this thread for their time & trouble in replying to me & for their suggestions & pointers. I do appreciate the responses I get to my enquiries.

        Thank you all.

FWIW I can confirm that MS Office 97 Professional SR-2 runs problem-free on Windows XP Professional SP2 fully updated. Are you saying that Word does not perform satisfactorily, or are you saying that all Office 97 apps are problematic?

Thank you your reply. In the time available I was only able to check Word. I hope to return to this problem very soon.

I am grateful for the help I am receiving.

How are you launching the document file? If you start Word first and use File>Open, do you get a different results than if you double-click the DOC file in Windows Explorer or launch it from an e-mail message?

Thank you for responding. I tried to open a document in different ways & always received the same error message.
