A favorite support topic of Microsoft’s apparently. Does this link help out at all?

Have you tried going into CMOS and disabling to Power Saver feature? Also, if you are running Win98 you may have trouble because of the number of mapped drives or peripheral devices that Win98 is disconnecting from during shutdown.
If all else fails, create a shortcut to this and it WILL shutdown the pc.
      c:windowsrundll.exe user.exe exitwindows

how do you create a shortcut to the command?

go to your desktop screen, right click anywhere on the background, select ‘new’ then select ‘shortcut’. then give it the path statement i posted earlier.

I tried your SHORTCUT and nothing happens. I click on it and it just sits there?????

do a ‘file find’ for that exe and then use that path to get it to work, mine may have had a typo in it…but it will work.

i am having no luck. I found the rundll.exe in the windows directory. Adjusted the shortcut to read C:windowsrundll.exe user.exe exitwindows When I click on it, nothing happens????

The shortcut should read RUNDLL32.exe,user,exitwindows – make sure that you have the commas in there, and are referencing RUNDLL32 and not RUNDLL.

All this shortcut does is to invoke the same function as the start menu’s shutdown command from an icon – but it may work since it doesn’t involve EXPLORER.EXE in the process of getting there.

              Hey Mark

Should the shortcut read as follows:

              C:/windows/rundll32.exe,user,exitwindows

I tried it and I get the message that the file can not be found????

            • #581215

Zoinks! I screwed up the text. So much for memory, eh?

              It should read: %systemroot%RUNDLL32.EXE user,exitwindows

The first comma was incorrect – hence the “file not found” message. Oy. If you’re curious, I stumbled onto this handy dandy reference on the web, which details many of the available options that can be referenced with this command.

almost…too many commas. paste this into the path statement for your shortcut and see if it works:

              C:WINDOWSRUNDLL32.EXE user,exitwindows
