Why does the .pst folder continue to grow and grow and can it be compacted/shrunk?

You can compact a pst file. Go to Tools | Services. Select the folder service and click properties. Click the “Compact Now” button.

The folder grows as items get stored in it. If you don’t have an account on a mail server, then your mail goes to a pst file. It’s also possible to set delivery to a pst file even if you have a mailbox on a server. Otherwise you either have a rule that puts items in the folder or someone is putting items in there.

        Woof! Woof!

Edited: I went home and looked under Tools. Guess what? My version of Outlook 98 does not have a Services choice. Is there any other way to make the .pst folder smaller? Maybe a third party product? Thanks.

One trick to watch with Outlook 97 & 98 is Journals. This is set on by default and causes server bloat. Turn it off and delete all entries under the journal tab if all else fails. catty flee (Cat, he flees.) grin

I’m guessing here, so maybe someone else can jump in. Try right clicking on the desktop shortcut. Choose properties. You may see your folder service listed here. If so, click on it then click the properties button.

Hi, OldDog. I read a Woody’s article in ZD dated in the year 2000. He said to do just what Dave said to do. In the folder column on the left side of Outlook, right click on the file you want to compact (my files is the Personal Folders file), click on Properties, click on Advanced, and you open a window with a few options.

            Thanks for the feedback.

I have 2000 configured in Corporate Workgroup mode, which is about as different as you can get from 98. Anyway, the way I get to that button is through the Mail icon in the Control Panels.

I have Outlook 2000 as standalone (internet email), but cannot find the compacting button anywhere. I have looked in Help (AKA “Helpless”) to no avail. Has anyone else managed to find a compact feature in Outlook 2000?
Another problem I have is that the Symantec fax won’t send from Outlook 2000. Anyone have any ideas on that? It used to start rasterising and then I got an error message that read something like “unexpected error at 000tmp” and now nothing happens at all – no send, no rasterising, no nothing…
            Help?

              Hi,

I have Outlook 2k IMO. To compact my pst file I rightclick on Outlook Today icon, click on properties, click the Advanced button, then click the Compact button.

I never got the free Symantec fax software to work, so I just removed it and used free fax software I got with my computer.

To compact your Outlook 2000 pst file:

Select the top item in the “Folder” list, right click, and select “Properties”
              Click the “Advance…” button
              Click the “Compact Now” button
