Can anyone tell me just what the “repair” part of this command does? What types of problems does it find and repair?

The ‘repair’ part checks whether there are corrupt records in tables. If it finds them, it tries to replace the corrupt data with a series of ### characters, and it creates a table named MSysCompactError with information about the corrupt records.
Note: the MSysCompactError will be removed the next time you compact and repair the database.
