Running a Web server is not much fun anymore. Sure, there are hackers and spammers, but even worse, the ‘white hat researchers’ and self-declared ‘Internet police’ add a huge amount of bandwidth sucking nonsense. So if you think it’s just hackers and spammers putting your server to its knees, think again. I would suggest to consider blocking ‘innocent’ networks (Web hosts, universities, Internet authorities, etc.) as well. No kidding. I have just a few domains, and none of them is showing up in any search engine, but I get millions of hits each and every day — even although the server is locked down and does not respond. However, less than 5% of this junk is coming from infected computers and hackers/spammers. The rest is coming from the nice folks doing ‘research’ and ‘protecting’ the world by monitoring the whole Internet. The best option is to only allow traffic from dynamic IP addresses, your domain registrar, and search engines you want to index your site. That’s it.
