    For several years, COMCAST customers have been provided Norton Anti-Virus, without extra cost to the customer.  COMCAST has now decided to increase their prices, by no longer providing Norton.

    I would like your suggestions for a robust replacement for Norton.

      Home user, W10.  Personally I don’t pay for it.  I use Microsoft Defender along with Malwarebytes  ADWcleaner.  A number of people here use the paid edition of Malwarebytes.

      You may find that Comcast did you a service.  I use Geo’s suggested apps, and am well satisfied.

      The message I received from Comcast is below. It is not clear to me how “xFi Advanced Security” fits into an overall security design. I expect I will uninstall Norton and activate Defender. Any other thoughts?

          No, it means a moderator had to edit it for you.

      I recently started a topic headed Internet Security Providers #2307999 at https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/internet-security-providers/#post-2308001 that addressed the loss of Norton Security Suite that was provided free by Comcast.

      The conclusion of the topic was, “Thank you all for contributing to our search for a new Internet Security Provider.

      Based upon your input, ESET Internet Security received the most positive response followed by Bitdefender Internet Security, Norton 360 Deluxe, and Windows Defender.

      Avast Premium Security and AVG Internet Security were nonstarters.”

      I believe the topic Internet Security Providers addresses in full your search for a, “… a robust replacement for Norton.”

      Comcast Xfinity is being confusing as can be about this. When you look at the details, they claim to be discontinuing free Norton Internet Security ONLY if you rent one of their rent an Xfinity xFi Gateways. Xfinity provides its own security via hardward and software in its xFi Gateways.They say, “xFi Advanced Security provides cybersecurity protection at the gateway level, protecting not only the devices that have screens, but all the connected devices in your home.”

      But elsewhere Comcast says it is discontiniung free Norton Internet Security for users of its internet service — and doesn’t mention anything about the xFi Gateways. So I suspect we won’t know for sure until January 1. The Xfinity page where you download Norton is:

      Hi guys brand new to the forums here – thanks so much to everyone who’s posted here, this is the only website I’ve found that addresses whether or not one is really losing Norton if you’re an xfinity subscriber come January 1st 2021

      I read and understood the previous posts on malwarebytes thanks for that too but – given I just spent $85 on 3 years of Norton protection, possibly unnecessarily (rolls eyes at himself) on amazon’s black friday sales specials I guess I’m stuck with Norton for the time being at least 🙂 …

      Plannerguy your post was super helpful 🙂 .. I tried logging into the norton account that Xfinity made me create years ago and surprisingly as of today (January 1st 2021) it still lists my Norton subscription as active… I do have my own modem rather than renting the one from Xfinity (works great, kicking myself for being scared for so long and not just buying one immediately like I should have when I switched to Xfinity/Comcast).

      So I’m scratching my head here trying to figure out what to do … will Norton be kind enough to notify me if my subscription suddenly becomes “not active” and it’s no longer providing updated protection?  Should I just continue to quietly use Xfinity’s free (for now apparently) Norton Security?  Or should I not take any risks, uninstall Xfinity’s free security right now and install the Norton subscription I paid for this past November 2020 (Black Friday sales)?     Again please bear in mind I’m stuck with Norton anyways since I already paid for three years worth of it 🙂  ($35 a year for 20 devices, bought two of those codes from amazon, plus $15 from newegg actually for one year for the desktop PC’s – phones were already covered by paid Norton I purchased previously).

      Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated – and again thanks so much to all of you, I would have had no idea what was going on if someone hadn’t started this thread and then continued it 🙂 ..

      Thank you so much Woody 🙂 … but still confused (I admit it I’m stupid 😛 ) … I don’t have to download it since it was already installed on my PC’s so I guess I’m lucky 🙂  … and just today (January 1st 2021 I mean) Norton let me run a live update … so I guess I’m wondering if anyone knows… does Norton automatically let you know when it no longer keeps itself current (that is when your subscription to it expires)?     If it does I’d be inclined to just quietly keep Norton on my PC’s until and if Xfinity/Comcast catches on and says ” Oh no you don’t ! ”  😛 ..

      Thanks to you both for posting Paul T and anonymous 🙂 … I  googled it and apparently Norton just flat out stops working when it decides the subscription has expired but was still a bit nervous given the unusual circumstances here with Comcast/Xfinity and it’s reassuring to see a MVP confirm this 🙂

      Another update… today is January 2nd 2021 and Norton from Comcast/Xfinity STILL let me do a live update and is still working… so I’m not sure if I just personally got lucky or if people who bought their own modems in general slipped under the radar temporarily (or permanently?)…

      I will post any changes (whether or not free Norton from Comcast/Xfinity stops working) on this thread in case this helps anyone… this thread/post pops up in a google search even if you’re not a member of the askwoody forum so…Woody thanks for creating the forum in the first place and kstephens thanks for starting the thread and of course thanks to everyone who posted 🙂

      kstephens I feel like I owe you an apology I think I hijacked your post 🙁 … it started out as a “find a suitable replacement for the norton that comcast/xfinity is taking away” and turned into ” Hey Norton is still working what should I do?”  (though I guess the two are related so hopefully this helps?) .. but my apologies 🙁 ..

      But (I know I know I apologize then I continue the hijacking 😛 ) … I’m beginning to think (even if Comcast/Xfinity doesn’t say this out loud) that they are going to just quietly let existing Norton installations stand/continue and simply deny the installation of Norton onto new devices or the devices of new customers who join comcast/xfinity.

      This is definitely groan-worthy for people like me who just bought $70 worth of Norton security it’s beginning to look like I’ll never have to use 😛  (can still use the $15 purchase for the phones/tablet come October when the current license runs out).. but in the long run worth it in not having to spend $35 a year (at least) for all the household devices is good if comcast/xfinity just continues to keep ignoring (not cancelling) existing Norton installations.

      Again I should point out I have purchased my own modem/router so I don’t know if that makes a difference and persons who rent a modem from Comcast/Xfinity had their Norton cancelled as of January 1st 2021.  Roger if you don’t mind me asking, do you rent a modem from Comcast/Xfinity or have you purchased your own one?

        No apology is necessary.  All of us want to make sure we(including us Comcast users) are all protected against viruses.

        My Norton is still functional, including scans and updates.  It may be that Comcast is not providing Norton for NEW customers, but will let people who have it already still use it.

        If Norton eventually goes belly-up on Comcast, I will just use Windows Defender.  AVTest.org rates antivirus, and they gave Windows Defender a high rating.

      I bought my own modem/router and as of today 01/05/2021 my Norton still functional. I also purchased their special offer for $14.99/12 months’ subscription and am thinking if I should request refund for it.

      This is good to know that one other person in addition to myself (with their own modem) is reporting that Norton is still working thanks for this 🙂   … it would be interesting to see if someone who is renting a modem from Comcast/Xfinity still has Norton up and running too.

      Apologies if I’m stating something you’ve already done 🙂  but… did you give them your credit card info?  Norton has a nasty habit of forcing this info from customers (terrible stuff) just to get Norton up and running but it’s easy to take that credit card info right off your norton account right after you’ve inputted it 🙂

      Having said that I have a reminder set on my computer as I get closer to the expiration date for my paid Norton subscription for my phones to double check and make darn sure they didn’t magically resurrect my credit card info or suddenly decide I’m signed up for auto pay again or something crazy like that 😛 .. apparently once they’re able to charge you again Norton won’t back down on the insane auto-renew rates they charge you at (I think Norton is banking on people just leaving their credit card info in there and not realizing Norton will auto renew it at astronomical rates)

      I am using a Comcast-applied modem, but the Norton deal had nothing to do with that.  Earlier, I used my  (outdated) modem, and still got Norton.

      Even if Norton has your credit card information, it would be a violation of both Federal and state law if they charged you without your permission.  In addition, you could disavow the “purchase” with your card provider.  Credit card providers are very sensitive about charges that are illegitimate, because in the end, the law is stacked against them, and they end up eating the amount themselves.  Norton would be unable to provide proof that you authorized the charge, because you didn’t.  If they were to allege that you authorized the charge (and you had not), then that would constitute a felony.

      As I recall, when I signed on with Comcast and got Norton (free), I did not provide a credit card number (nor would I for a free item).  At any rate, that was years ago, and any card I  would have provided at that time would have expired.  Without a current card, they would not be allowed to charge the card.  If the card company authorized the use of an expired card, then the card company is liable for any disputed charges.

      Thanks Kstephens this is good to know 🙂 … and yes, very true you can dispute the charges through your credit card company… since I’m the paranoid sort though 😛  I still removed my credit card info from my norton account immediately right after they forced me to enter it (in this case it was for a paid norton subscription for my phones, Comcast/Xfinity basically said “nope we won’t install onto your android phones” back when I tried it , albeit many years ago)

      I’ve been watching this thread for updates as I’m using a rented modem from Comcast (it’s an older one though, they keep asking to replace it with a new one but those overheat) and my Norton still works.

      Elsewhere on the web others have mentioned that the subscription will probably expire at the end of January like any other. Not sure if Comcast simply goofed up on that January 1st end date or what, but I do know back in December I got a notification that my Norton subscription would end soon.

      I am using my own modem ,  My norton account has Both “Norton 360 Online from Xfinity” and “Norton Security Online”,   7 License allowance from “Norton 360 Online”,  5 License allowance from  “Norton Security Online”.

      Here is my  detail info

      I have few  Win 10  system, one of them using “Norton 360 Online”,  when open the  Norton 360 online App, it NEVER prompt for message like “xfinity no longer offers Norton Security Online as of 1/1/21”

      However, another   WIn 10 system   using “Norton Security Online”, it still has a blue background prompt message, Hope this info help.

      Note: since “Norton 360 Online” is not for  iOS/Android Mobile Phone , so I still need to use “Norton Security Online” for my mobile device. Hope this help.

      Two anonymous posters thanks so much that is helpful info 🙂 .. and yep that actually happened to me too on Win 10 – well sort of, on one Win 10 PC it gives the message “Xfinity no longer offers Norton Security Online” and on the other Win 10 PC it does not give that message – but on both PC’s Norton still works.. it will be interesting to see whether or not Xfinity/Comcast just shuts Norton down completely as of end of January or later on or if they just keep it going…

      And yep, I actually know a fellow Xfinity customer who had the same experience, the 7 licenses that customer was allowed way back before Xfinity insisted said customer had to open a norton account still worked – so that lucky person had 7 licenses from before plus the 5 licenses from opening a Norton account 🙂 … So that makes me wonder if Norton will just go on working indefinitely as long as you leave the license and the Windows install it’s on alone.

      Wirecutter has never steered me wrong, here’s their list of the modems they recommend most for various internet service providers including comcast/xfinity … I had no idea their top pick was $80 that’s cheap compared to how much you’ll save on those rental fees 🙂 … BUT, important but here, this list doesn’t do you any good if you use comcast for your phone service too in which case you’d need a more expensive modem with phone jacks on it as well …

      For persons using phone plus internet for comcast unfortunately you’d be stuck with a $250 modem plus tax like the  Netgear CM1150V  (no idea if it’s good or not but I know I paid $200 for my voice plus internet modem) for example like in the link below… still given enough years of service the modem will eventually pay for itself then you start to make money off it compared to the rental fees one pays month after month, found my own very easy to set up too it’s not hard 🙂   … my purchased modem has been running a year and five months now with no issues or problems.   From what I could dig up on the internet rental fee is $14 per month or $168 per year …. so in my case 17 months times $14 is $238… modem has paid for itself and I am now making a profit (no rental fee) that will continue to increase as the years go by 🙂 … even at a $250 price given enough time you’ll start to make money 🙂 ..

      According to expert USAF_E-8_RET’s 05-Jan-2021 post in the Xfinity thread Update on Norton Security Online Deactivation :

      Norton will begin to deactivate your Comcast’s Norton Security Online on 7 January 2021. This will be a “throttled removal” and could take into the month of February for it to be totally completed. In regards to throttled it is basically to control “call volume” to Support. …If the volume is too heavy, the deactivation process can be throttled back to a slower deactivation schedule ...

      Users might also find some useful information in koa’s 30-Dec-2020 thread How Do I Make Sure My Desktop PC is Protected? in the Norton forum. I’m not a Comcast / Xfinity customer but based on the information I was able to find on this topic, Xfitnity’s free xFi Advanced Security is only available to customers who rent a xFi Gateway, and it can’t remove malware from your system and is not intended to be a substitute for a full antivirus. It simply monitors the network traffic for connected devices on your network for malicious activity (including smart devices like security cameras that could be hacked) and can prevent you from browsing to malicious sites. If a device appears to be compromised it will isolate / block that device from the rest of your network until you “unblock” that device with their xFi Advanced Security app. My understanding is that Xfinity customers were supposed to receive an e-mail explaining how they could switch to a paid subscription of Norton 360 using a special offer code. For example, the Norton’s US online store has a web page at Our Best Norton 360 Plans for Select Xfinity Customers that currently lists Norton 360 Deluxe (1-Year, 5-Devices) for $14.99 USD, compared to the regular price of $104.99 USD (currently on sale <here> for $49.99 USD to the general public if you live in the US) that you’ll likely pay next year if you purchase directly from Norton and agree to annual auto-renewal of your subscription at the full price. (note: auto-renewal can be disabled in your Norton Account once you have completed your purchase).

      I should mention that I used Norton for several years on my old Vista SP2 machine, but my Win 10 machine now uses Windows Defender as the main antivirus, supplemented by the occasional on-demand scan with Malwarebytes Free.

      On the topic Internet Security Providers at    https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/internet-security-providers/     it was established that, of the 21 voices contributing to the thread, ESET Internet Security received the most positive response followed by Bitdefender Internet Security, Norton 360 Deluxe, and then Windows Defender.

      Avast Premium Security and AVG Internet Security were nonstarters.

      I suggest that if you have questions related to a replacement for Norton you look at the postings postings.

      well darn I knew it was too good to be true 😛 .. but thanks so much Imacri, now I know to expect it at least when I turn on the PC and Norton displays a not-working message (in which case I guess my amazon purchases will pay off after all).

      Kathy thanks for that as well 🙂 … on the topic of internet security from what I’ve seen online there is a LOT of debate over which programs work the best, whether or not you can just simply use Windows Defender and not click on anything stupid (not to insult my wife she’s great and all but not the most computer literate person so you have to take family members into account too who may do silly things 😛  …. at least with Norton I know it sometimes says ” Hey wait a minute this is a bad website/download don’t do that ! ” ) .. I’m not an expert on internet security by any means 🙂  so I look to the reviews from that Neil guy on PC Mag (some impressive credentials in computer security apparently) and he gave Bitdefender and Norton a big thumbs up.

      If you go with antivirus software other than Norton make sure that you fully remove Norton from your computer.

      The Norton Removal tool uninstalls all the Norton products currently installed in your computer.

      Well the axe has dropped – today (January 12th 2021 ) Norton stopped working on my computers, fortunately I had one of my paid norton subscriptions I got back during Black Friday ready to go… anonymous thanks for that link I second that, if you don’t use the norton removal tool before reinstalling Norton I can attest from personal experience you’re in for a world of headache and from what I understand absolutely , if you’re using some antivirus / security program other than Norton this can also create a lot of headaches if Norton isn’t uninstalled completely from your PC.

      So I guess my amazon purchases will go to use after all.. though I’m just shaking my head at what I perceive to be corporate greed on Comcast/Xfinity’s part… I guess it’s possible they’re losing money with everyone at home on the internet due to covid but I can’t help but wonder if it’s the opposite… if this somehow works to their advantage… maybe more people signing up for higher speed internet?

      But then you have people out of work due to covid who couldn’t afford that kind of upgrade … and I can’t help but feel they’re mercilessly taking advantage of the situation by taking away internet security from people who might be being squeezed by financial difficulties due to covid who might need it (though hopefully if one cannot afford paid antivirus they will stumble across this post like I did and know that there are good free options out there too like malwarebytes or the PC mag recommendations).

      Sorry for the soapbox musings that have no practical impact on this conversation 😛 … though I can tell you I’ve been on the Comcast/Xfinity forums too and there are a LOT of unhappy people on there !

        Providing AV with your ISP is a marketing exercise on the part of the AV company. You shouldn’t blame your ISP.

        I no longer use 3rd party AV because Windows Defender (or whatever it’s called today) works very well, but I also run manual malware scans with MBAM occasionally.

      I totally agree. In this time of need for cyber protection they no longer support this product. That is poor customer relations. Instead of advertising they do this they just remove it.

      Rethinking my service with that other content provider.

      Well I’ve noticed on the internet that there is a LOT of debate about what is and is not a good antivirus/security software suite, if Norton is even necessary 🙂   .. looks like there’s a debate here too 🙂 .. I’m just grateful for all the kind people who post here and volunteer this helpful info 🙂

      As far as I know if you switch over to AT&T they still provide free antivirus/security software (McAfee) which PCMag claims is pretty good though not as good as Norton … but then I’ve seen online too from various sources the argument that Windows Defender paired with say Malwarebytes will do just fine (PC Mag says Kaspersky Security Cloud Free is their top pick for free antivirus but I’m not a security IT software expert type guy by any means 😛 ) …

      However – and bear in mind this is info I received from Xfinity years ago so this info could be highly suspect 😛 … Xfinity claims that A&T caps the number of devices that can connect to the internet, limits bandwidth speed in ways Xfinity does not and so forth (wiser heads than mine please chime in and give your opinion so we have a source other than Xfinity’s biased info 😛 ) … I do remember years ago asking AT&T about this and the sales rep I spoke to reluctantly admitting it was true then desperately trying to convince me why AT&T was better.     Honestly I’ve found Xfinity price gouges you the least for internet service though I’ve been with them long enough to qualify for certain discounts (then again I was with AT&T forever and they still couldn’t offer the better prices Xfinity did).

      Also before jumping ship to AT&T bear in mind during Black Friday/December sales you can pick up a 10 license Norton for as cheap as $15 or (thinks) if memory serves me correctly – 20 devices? – for $35 , that’s per year of service.    Checking the internet I   see   Black Friday pricing that took place in the past for Malwarebytes at $24 per PC so more expensive but – maybe you get what you pay for? 🙂

      My own personal experience –  my wife is absolutely NOT computer literate by any means and runs the same risk the “typical” computer user does of downloading something bad or clicking on the wrong thing , same issue for my kids when they were younger and Norton kept us protected from human stupidity for decades 😛 …

        The AT&T support page Data Usage Support at https://www.att.com/help/wireless/data-usage/ confirms that AT&T will throttle bandwidth under certain conditions (e.g., “On an unlimited plan? We may temporarily slow your speed at any time if our network is busy. We may also slow it after you use more than 50GB or 22GB of data in a single bill period.“).

        According to the June 2018 CNET article Comcast Says It Isn’t Throttling Heavy Internet Users Anymore, Comcast/Xfinity began throttling bandwidth in 2008 but stopped that practice on 11-Jun-2018. Xfinity’s official disclosure statement at https://www.xfinity.com/policies/internet-broadband-disclosures seems to confirm that and states “Comcast does not degrade or impair access to lawful Internet traffic on the basis of content, application, service, user, or use of a non-harmful device …Comcast currently does not maintain a separate system to assist with managing times of congestion. As our network technologies and usage of the network continue to evolve, we reserve the right to implement a new congestion management system if necessary…  and will provide updates here as well as other locations if a new system is implemented.”

      Here’s PC Mag’s review of the free version of Malwarebytes though I know users on here would probably disagree with PC Mag’s stance 🙂 … again not taking a side one way or the other here I’m sure the people on here recommending Malwarebytes know a lot more about this stuff than I do !  😛 ..

      I recently purchased Norton 360 and I can no longer receive or send Comcast emails on my Apple devices.   Norton tech guy told me to change my vpn location country from USA to Canada and my emails work, BUT I can’t shop for local to my home as I only get search result for places in Canada.  This has been a NIGHTMARE,   15-20 calls  to Norton to try and resolve and I am waiting fro a call back from a level 2 tech in their Apple Department.     Anyone have suggestions for a good vpn and antivirus company for Apple devices & Comcast Internet?

        Any Norton 360 for Windows users having problems with their Comcast email should note that Norton Secure VPN for Windows recently introduced a feature called Split Tunnel that allows users to exclude specific apps from their VPN traffic. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like this Split Tunnel feature is currently available for the Secure VPN that Norton offers for Apple devices. Oops1 recently posted in the XFinity forum thread Cannot Send E-mail that their Comcast email works correctly if they exclude the XFinity Connect app in the Split Tunnel feature of their ExpressVPN (note that ExpressVPN states <here> that their desktop app offers Split Tunnel feature for both Windows and Mac except MacOS 11), so if you’re looking for a different security program for your Apple devices (or want to disable/remove Norton Secure VPN and purchase a different VPN) make sure that VPN offers a Split Tunnel feature.

        I used Norton for Windows products for several years and would contact official Norton Customer Support via Live Chat at https://www.norton.com/chat if I needed help with issues regarding billing, subscriptions and device activation (e.g., anything related to my Norton Account), but I always posted in the Norton Community first to see if other users could help with problems using my Norton product (e.g., configuration, glitches, error messages, etc.).       I’d change the VPN location to Canada, or not use a VPN and then change your search criteria to find local suppliers.

      ESET works well.  We have used it on 8 computers for a year or so.  I’d recommend just the AV vs. their Internet Suite.  You need an AV and a firewall; Windows Firewall is fine, has enough granularity for most everyone and also has a simple set of switches to block specific programs, such as Edge (Allow a program through firewall…)

      ESET’s suite is fine but has so many settings and features I wound up turning off that I was almsot back to just the AV.  It uses Windows Firewall, then builds on it.

      Generally, I tend to avoid suites, too many layers tend to fight each other.  Never did completely understand all of Kaspersky Suite’s settings, seems there are hundreds!
