Coloring Rule (OL2000)

Hi,

I need to make certain messages received from a Yahoo! Group clearly visible. Although I’d never dealt with Rules, I thought I’d try to make a rule show the message with a different color upon reception. However, I cannot find an option to show messages with different colors, except perhaps a default one called “list of exceptions”, which apparently colors unwanted mail. If there is no other way, and provided the latter will just color messages, not deleting/hiding any e-mail, I will use it by adding the Group’s address to its list. But I wanted to know what you Loungers think, as I have no experience with rules and what I’m looking for might just be in front of my nose.

Hi Leif,

Thanks for your reply. The KB you referred me to led me to think there was something like an Organize feature, which in fact I had occasionally seen but never got to know what it was worth. Some people call it ignorance
I’m playing with it a little, I have to go to sleep now but tomorrow night I’ll get both hands to it and see what results. BTW, the article itself was indeed useful to understand how OL works with names in the To field.

Try the more detailed options under View|Define Views – then choosing Copy, Modify or New – finally Automatic Formatting|Add. A screenshot of a possibility is here. HTH

I’ve set up an Organize rule (or whatever I should call it) that colors received messages from the group, catching several name variations the senders might happen to try. I started to see your post and the View | …. options you mention, but seeing so many buttons and grids at this hour overwhelmed me. I’ll have a more detailed go tomorrow and let you know the results.

Hi all,

I think I achieved what I wanted… at least most of it.

What I did first was use the Color Organize feature. I created a rule that would work for the Inbox only (I don’t know how to make it work for all folders). My first attempt was to catch mails from the group by indicating OL to filter mails sent TO a particular address. But later I realized that OL does not filter mail addresses, but profile names, or that’s what I got from the KB article Leif kindly provided. So I tried adding several likely profile names, separating them with commas for the boolean “or” to take effect.
e.g., since it’s a forum on financial calculus, some entries were: groupname@groups.yahoo.com, calculo, c

Glad you finally got it sorted. It does tend to be a bit of to set up the first time!

Remember to give the View a Special Name – as you can then apply it to all folders.

Also, remember that the View stays with the PST. If you want to Archive, you will need to copy the folder into a PST Archive. Then delete the archived messsages (now duplicated into the Archive) from the original PST. The only way to migrate a View is to migrate the actual PST itself.

Please post back if what I have just said is not 100% clear to you.

[/indent]Errr… maybe I wasn’t quite clear, but a moment after I had copied the Messages View, I deleted this copied View. So, I cannot tell why things are working now… It’s still kind of confusing for me, and I cannot find some time to further investigate it .

Let’s see if I got the last part of your message right: each View is saved in a PST folder. I don’t archive, so I’m not familiar with the process, but it seems that archiving takes the View away, along with the old messages… or that’s what I inferred. So the only way to preserve the View is to copy the folder to another PST, which seems to render archiving somewhat useless…

I’m satisfied with the way things are working, but I’ll be formatting my PC in a few hours. Hopefully I’ll get things restored in no time!
