Close Program Problem (Outlook 2003 )

When I close Outlook 2003 I have started to receive an “error message” the message is always the same but the heading of the dialog box varies:-
WMS ST Notif Window 000001A4 0000054: OUTLOOK.EXE – Application Error
ASHAMPOO SUPPORT (NIB) – Message (HTML) OUTLOOK.EXE – Application Error
S: OUTLOOK.EXE – Application Error
WMS Idle OUTLOOK.EXE – Application Error (There could be more to this heading)

The message is:-

The instruction at “0x35cd179f” referenced memory at “0x35cd179f””. The Memory could not be “read”.
Click on OK to terminate the program
There is a lone button OK

Thus far I have reinstalled WOPR 2003.
Removed the only COM add-in from “Slovak Technical Services”.
Done a repair install of Outlook under HELP Detect and Repair.

The problem seems to be fairly common on the web, but never specific. I have read that it is part of Automatic Update and will be fixed in the future. The best words I have found to search on are “The memory could not be read”

Any assistance, suggestions would be appreciated.

None of those sound familiar, but I noticed the unusual word ASHAMPOO, and your post 441,292 was about one of their products. What else do you have running from them?

I have about 7 or 8 (just checked there are 11) of their programs, I have found them all easy to use. I have run them for months without problem, I also am confused about the heading Ashampoo, but the problem pre-existed that particular message.

Might have fixed the problem, I used the Inbox Repair Tool as described at

Errors were found, I chose to repair and after four or five openings the problem has not returned.
I will make a further post tomorrow.
Is it of any value to post the repair log file, it only makes a little bit of sense to me.

Bad news, I still have the problem. This time consistent with the heading
S: OUTLOOK.EXE Application error.

The program/file name “S” just doesn’t mean anything to me. If you look in Task Manager, can you find a process that might be “S”? Actually SysInternals’ Process Explorer provides a bit more info than the Task Manager if you don’t mind yet another download…

As suggested I have downloaded and installed Processor Explorer

I saved a log file without Outlook running the a second save with Outlook running. Both are attached.

My install CD was loaded from a drive S: (is this possibly the S: the S was originally for Sony when I had 2 CD drives a Sony Drive and a Yamaha Drive [Y]).

It is absolutely beyond my level of experience.

I can change the drive letter, but cannot guarantee when or which dialog box I will get.

Wow, lot of stuff running.

It should not matter how you installed Outlook, since Outlook should not be looking for the install source when you close it.

I’m running low on suggestions. Do any of your other programs “touch” email in any way? For example, I have a program that pushes messages out to a server so I can pick them up with my Treo. Try closing all the open programs and system tray items (except antivirus and firewall) before closing Outlook and see whether that prevents the crash when closing Outlook.

The system has run with the current programs for months, what I think started the issue was the Magical Snap program can send a screen capture through e-mail. I tried it the generated e-mail remained in the new mail box, the system locked. I shut down the message and it was saved to the Inbox without a receptient,.

I have uninstalled a few programs, did an Office Repair and install and reset my options, the issue is the problem is intermittent.

I will add more when I can be more precise.

Thanks jscher2000 for your assistance to date, I have at last eliminated the error messages which seem to be a conflict between Outlook 2003 (without contact manager) and WOPR 2003, I did e-mail support at WOPR but it was not acknowledged.

Basically what I have done is open Outlook 2003 >Tools>Options>Mail Format Tab and unchecked the two boxes:-
Use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to edit e-mail
Use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to read Rich Text e-mail messages

As a result when Outlook 2003 opens I do not get the WOPR Commander icon in the notification area. But I do not get error messages on closing.

I am totally confused, I live alone and apart from my grandchildren changing a setting during one of their visits I have never changed any settings.

My questions are:-

What is the default installation for the Microsoft Office Word 2003 options?
Do you think uninstalling WOPR and reinstalling would be of any value?
Any suggestions for receiving WOPR support?

By default, Word is the editor for Outlook 2003. Having Word started before opening Outlook might help. (The latter on the theory that when you close Outlook, it will try to close the associated “child” applications, i.e., the applications it launched.) Perhaps you’ve already tried that…

Not really, but I only installed once and don’t recall the options. (I use WOPR 2003 on a laptop on which I do not use Outlook.)

I can’t recall the advice on how to make contact, but I think I’ve seen it here in the past few months.

I believe I have found the solution, not being happy with the constant variable error messages I did a lot of research. I did not know, but there is a different file format for Outlook 2003 to that that was available for Outlook Personal Folders (97-2002).

There is so much paper around me at the moment but these links will be useful, both are less than a quarter of a page.

I will keep the forum informed, a very accidental find to one little tip got me pointed in the correct???? direction.

I was using a Microsoft Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders file (.pst) and have now converted to a Unicode-capable Microsoft Outlook 2003 Personal Folders File (.pst) file. The obvious question is whether my file had been/was in excess of the 2Gbyte limit of the Microsoft Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders file, it was not.

The pleasing part is no error messages for two days. There must be hundreds of forums on the web asking the same question that I asked, none had a solution.

Thanks Hans, that was where I sent the request (I think) I have uninstalled so many programs from my system that it is almost worth reinstalling XP-PRO. I was ready to blame anybody/anything including the dog (which I realise I don’t have). See my earlier post today I think I have found a solution.
